The SS-Fallschirmjäger-Bataillon 500 was formed in Chlum, Czechoslovakia, in October 1943 (which was not the first attempt to form parachute units within the SS arms, but the 1937 effort was not successful) and was made up of volunteers from the SS arms, the general SS, and the SS penal detachment (SS-Bewährungs Abteilung),who were thus given a chance to cleanse themselves in combat.

The training took place at the Luftwaffe Fallschirm-Schule Nr.3 in Madanrushka-Banja, Yugoslavia, with practice jumps in November 1943 and later in Papa, Hungary, to complete the training.

He was sent back to Yugoslavia where he took part in anti-partisan operations until February 1944 when the upcoming Operation Rösselsprung began. The men of the battalion parachuted and landed on gliders at the headquarters of Partisan commander Josip Broz Tito in the mountains near the town of Drvar on May 25, 1944. The attack was successful, but Tito managed to escape, the paratroopers suffered heavy casualties in the partisan attacks from the mountains around Drvar, before the SS Freiwilligen-Gebirgs Division Prinz Eugen broke through to the surrounded battalion. The battalion was then deployed at Petravac against the partisans before being moved to Ljubljana for rest in June.

Sent to Gotenhafen in East Prussia to take part in the operation to occupy the Aaland Islands in the Baltic Sea after the Finnish surrender, but the operation was cancelled before preparations were completed. This was followed by a move to Riga and later to Vilnius, where the battalion was involved in the heavy fighting for Memel in October 1944.

It was disbanded in October 1944 and the remaining soldiers formed the nucleus of the newly formed SS-Fallshirmjäger-Bataillon 600 in Austria.
