CHN - PTL02/Type 87 (100/105 mm stíhač tankov)

PTL02 - wheeled tank destroyer armed with a 100 mm cannon with a smooth barrel. The export version called WMA301 is equipped with 105 cannons with a grooved barrel.

Developed from the Type 87 tank destroyer, which was developed in the mid-1980s, but due to technical problems, its development was stopped.

Developed by NORINCO for "light" mechanized divisions PLA rapid reaction forces. The vehicle is equipped with a modified three-seater tank tower Type 88, the chassis is made of armored vehicle 6x6 WZ551.
Of the many variants of self-propelled artillery systems on a wheeled chassis WZ551, this type is the first to be in active service. It is used in artillery regiments of newly formed light mechanized divisions armed with an armored vehicle WZ551.

At least three light mechanized divisions have these assets in their arsenal, including the elite 127th Mechanized Division (part of the 54th Army Corps) in Jinan Military region.

Compared to conventional tracked vehicles, the wheeled chassis is more mobile when using the built road network. Weighing 19 tons, it is easily transported by air when the medium transport aircraft Y-8 carries two vehicles and IL-76MD can carry three vehicles. The only disadvantage of the device is that even though a 100 mm cannon is enough to destroy armored vehicles, older tanks and fortifications, it is relatively ineffective against heavily armored modern MBTs. The manufacturer is also developing a variant equipped with a 120 mm (125 mm) cannon with a smooth barrel on an 8x8 wheeled chassis.

The vehicle WZ551 is an armored personnel carrier that has a propulsion system located at the front, a combat unit in the middle and ammunition at the rear. The vehicle has a four-member crew (commander, shooter, charger and driver).

Armament: the main armament consists of a 100 mm cannon with a smooth barrel modified from a towed anti-tank cannon Type 86, with sub-caliber ammunition (APFSDS - armor piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot) with a heavy metal core, but can also use cumulative and fragmentation ammunition. The vehicle carries a supply of 30 pieces of ammunition. The fire control system consists of an optical sight with a night vision device and a laser rangefinder. The same system is used on the tank Type 88. The cannon also allows the use of anti-tank guided missiles fired from the barrel, developed on the basis of the Soviet system Bastion. The range of the missiles is 4000 ~ 5000 m with a probability of hitting a stationary target up to 90%. The missile is also usable against low-flying targets (helicopters). Auxiliary armament consists of 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun W85 on the command dome with a maximum firing range of 2000 m and 480 rounds and a coupled 7.62 mm machine gun with 800 rounds.
Protection: armor protection of the device is weak, resistant to 7.62 mm ammunition. Laser-guided PTRS protection is provided by smoke grenade launchers on each side of the tower. The crew is protected from the effects of WMD and the vehicle is equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system.
Propulsion: the vehicle is originally equipped with a German four-stroke, eight-cylinder supercharged air-cooled BF8L413F diesel engine with 235 kW (320 hp) at 2,500 rpm. The vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission with nine forward and one reverse speed. The central tire inflation system and tire design allow you to drive on roads at a speed of 30 km for a distance of 100 km if the tire is damaged.

A few PTL02s were also produced with the Western-made 105 mm gun. They differ from the 100 mm version by a different turret.
