In 1929, a competition was announced for a new heavy armoured car, which was to operate on roads or in light terrain. The machine was to use a conventional truck platform and was to have a turret with the main armament of a small calibre gun.

The following were selected as suitable chassis:
- M205 platformof Magirus
- platform G-31 from Büssing NAG
- G-3 platform from Daimler-Benz

The chassis were to be fitted with the same armoured turret structure (adapted to the dimensions of the different platform types). The thickness of the armouring was 14.5 mm at the most exposed points (front) of the hull and turret. The armour plates were welded at acute angles to increase ballistic protection. The armoured car was driven by the rear two axles, the machines had double steering (front and rear). The first machines received only one machine gun MG 13 (1,300 rounds), later machines already received the planned KwK 30 20mm calibre cannon (200 rounds). For part of the production, the position of the cannon and machine gun was "switched". Part of the production received an additional turret mount for the machine gun, which was used to direct fire against aerial targets.

The absence of radio equipment forced the development and production of a machine with a radio SdKfz.232 (6-rad). The machine was intended for commanders of lower grades. Further developments produced yet another radio version SdKfz.263 (6-rad).


The total production of SdKfz.231/232 is listed as 123 units produced. Most vehicles were produced by Daimler-Benz.
