From V3S to AKTIS
Off-road trucks are the basic means of transport in any army. They bear the brunt of the day-to-day life of troops in peacetime and in armed conflict, when it is necessary to transport not only hundreds and thousands of troops, but also a wide variety of materials, supplies, spare parts and ammunition. Without their unobtrusive but indispensable service, the army would cease to function.

The core of the off-road truck fleet in the former Czechoslovak and now also in the Slovak army were and still are Praga and Tatra vehicles. While the Tatra trucks dominate the heavy vehicle sector, the legendary Praga V3S/V3S M1/V3S M2 has dominated the medium off-road vehicle category for decades. Trucks from the former USSR - ZiL-157, ZiL-131 and KamAZ - are also introduced in smaller numbers in the Slovak Army. The well-proven "vétrieska" is an extremely successful design and has been in service for decades in a variety of forms. It is characterized by reliability, excellent off-road characteristics, simplicity and low maintenance.

However, neither time nor technical progress can be stopped. Despite all these qualities, today Pragy V3S (the same applies to vehicles from the former USSR) are morally and technically obsolete. They do not comply with the provisions of the current decree on the conditions of operation on roads, nor with the related ECE regulations and Euro 1 and 2 emission standards. Many of them are in poor technical condition, they are no longer economical in operation, and there are growing problems with the provision of spare parts and service repairs. Due to non-compliance with international operating standards, they cannot operate in Western European countries and therefore cannot participate in exercises abroad. The time is simply ripe to replace them.

This problem has been dealt with by the Ministry of Defence and the Slovak Government since the Slovak Republic was founded. The principle was adopted that the replacement of the vehicle fleet of the Slovak Army would be solved by production in the Slovak industry. This will not only ensure the service and supply of spare parts during the entire operation of the vehicle in the Army of the Slovak Republic, but it will also help the revival and development of the automotive industry in Slovakia.

In 1995-96, comparative tests of Sipox Corso (SR), Steyr 12M21 (Austria), Mercedes Benz 1117A and Unimog 1550L/38 (Germany) vehicles were carried out in VTSÚ Záhorie. On the basis of the project submitted by VAB Sipox, a. s., Bánovce nad Bebravou (now Tatra Sipox), which was based on the design of the Steyr 12M21, it was decided that the medium off-road vehicle for the Slovak Army would be developed and produced in Slovakia in cooperation with a foreign partner, with the finalist being the company Tatra Sipox, a. s., Bánovce nad Bebravou.

The development of the vehicle, named AKTIS, was financed by the Ministry of Economy and the manufacturer. The army defined the tactical-technical requirements and provided some of the testing. Tatra Sipox cooperated closely with MAN-Steyr in the development, from which it took over the cab and engine. The transmission is also from a foreign supplier. The frame, axles, additional gear, winch and some other parts come from the domestic development and production. If the vehicle can be produced in large series, the share of foreign components can be significantly reduced.

The first prototypes produced were subjected to rigorous testing between 1997 and 2000. There were six of them in total, in a flatbed version and with two types of box bodies. During development, the original Steyr cab was replaced by the new, considerably more modern MAN L 2000 cab, which meets the most stringent criteria for ergonomics, functionality and safety.

The vehicle was tested in several stages. Tests of the individual units on the stands confirmed that, for example, the domestically produced axles were at least equal to foreign products. Functionality, durability and parameters for homologation were verified during the driving tests. The durability was also tested on the demanding test track of the Czech Tatrovka in Kopřivnice. The general public could get acquainted with the prototypes for the first time during the car show in Nitra in 1999. At the International Defence Engineering Exhibition IDEE 2000 in Trenčín, AKTIS cars were awarded the crystal plaque for the best exhibit in the category.

The results of the inspection and military tests in VTSU Záhorie and in VU in Nitra confirmed that the vehicles meet all tactical-technical requirements of the Slovak Army. On the basis of these results, the Minister of Defence decided that from 5 October 2000 the medium off-road vehicle is included in the armament of the Slovak Army. This created a decisive prerequisite for the unification of military means of transport in the form of a vehicle fully compliant with the European standard. The Ministry of the Interior and the civilian sector have also shown interest in the vehicle.

In 2001, the army should purchase the first eleven vehicles (nine rollers and two with box bodies). Before that, our troops assigned to the UN peacekeeping missions in Eritrea and in Cyprus will receive new vehicles. However, their purchase is financed by the UN. If they prove their qualities in real service in harsh climatic conditions, this will be an excellent springboard for possible export activities. AKTIS vehicles are approved for operation on civilian roads not only in Slovakia but also in the Czech Republic in seventeen different chassis and body variants (e.g. roller, various box bodies, tanker, ISO and MULTILIFT container carrier and others).

Technical description:

The AKTIS MW 11 4x4.1R medium off-road vehicle is a classic concept vehicle with a continuous frame, solid axles, 4x4 drive, a trambus cab and easy fitting wide-profile off-road tyres. It is powered by a MAN D 0826 LFL DIESEL in-line six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 6,870 cm3, liquid cooling, a maximum power output of 162 kW at 2,400 rpm and a maximum engine speed of 2,400 rpm. 162 kW at 1,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 820 Nm at 1,400 rpm. min-1. The engine complies with the Euro 2 emission standard and is suitable for starting at temperatures down to -30 °C.

Torque is transmitted via a 380 mm diameter MAN single-disc dry clutch to a fully synchronised gearbox with nine forward and one reverse gear. The gearbox is adapted to different types of auxiliary drive connections (three outputs). The two-speed distributing auxiliary gearbox is equipped with a torque divider that transmits torque to the front and rear axles, while the front drive can be switched off.

The stable frame with U-shaped longitudinal members and cross tubular beams is adapted to the mounting of various types of superstructures. Fixed axles with planetary reducers in the wheels are suspended front and rear by parabolic lips with hydraulic dampers, with a torsion stabilizer at the rear.

The braking system is air, double-circuit, with switchable ABS. The brakes are drum brakes. The system allows both single and double circuit trailer braking systems to be connected to the vehicle.

A simple wheel assembly with 14,5-20, 14,5 R 20, 365/80 R 20 wide terrain tyres is used on both front and rear axles. The spare wheel is located on the right side behind the cab on a bracket attached to the main frame. The handling is facilitated by a lifting device (cable winch). The AVIN 40/50 mm eye-pin type self-propelled towing device allows the towing of braked trailers weighing up to 12 000 kg on paved roads and up to 3 500 kg off-road. An auxiliary towing bracket can be easily fitted under the main towing bracket for towing older trailer types up to 3,500 kg which have a lower mounting height to the frame.

The MAN L 2000 trambus cab has seats for the driver and two passengers. There is a hatch in the ceiling and a machine gun tray on the roof. The cab can be folded down to provide access to the engine. The vehicle is equipped with a winch with mechanical drive (from the gearbox) with a total pull of 5 t and a rope length of 50 m. The DC electrical system operates at 24 V. The source of electrical power is an alternator and a battery.

The 180 l fuel tank is located on the right side of the chassis. The kerb weight is 5 640 kg, the gross weight 11 000 kg (12 000 kg in the civilian version) and the total weight of the combination (vehicle + trailer) a maximum of 23 000 kg.
