Israel Defense Forces
The Israel Defense Forces (Hebrew צבא הגנה לישראל / Cva ha-hagana le-Yisrael), also known as Cahal (צה״ל), is a military organization of the State of Israel. They are headed by a Chief of General Staff who reports directly to the Minister of Defense and indirectly to the Prime Minister. They consist of three main components - ground forces, air forces and navy. They were established on 26 May 1948 and were a continuation of the pre-existing paramilitary organisation Hagana. Members of the Jewish Brigade and the Irgun and Lechi organizations also joined their ranks. Immediately after their formation, they had to defend the existence of their state in the War of Independence. In this they were greatly helped by arms and ammunition from Czechoslovakia.
