Poznámka:
Note:
viz historie At the time when the Curtiss P-40 fighter was initially entering production, Curtiss's chief designer Donovan Berlin was already thinking about its successor. The P-40 was already largely obsolescent by contemporary.
The XP-46 was generally similar to its P-40 predecessor, but was somewhat smaller and featured a wide-track, inwardly-retracting undercarriage. The engine was to be the newly-developed Allison V-1710-39 (F3R) twelve-cylinder liquid-cooled Vee of 1150 hp. This same engine was also later to power the D-version of the P-40. In view of the relatively high wing loading, automatic leading-edge slots (a la Bf 109E).
Influenced by contemporary British thinking - armament was to be two 0.50-in machine guns in the nose below the cylinder banks and eight 0.30 inch machine-guns in the wings (a la Hurricane).
A month after the initial XP-46 order, the USAAC modified their requirement and called for the provision of self-sealing fuel tanks and armor protection for the pilot.
In order to save time and get something in the air as quickly as possible, the second prototype (40-3054) was delivered without armament or radio. This aircraft was redesignated XP-46A. The XP-46A was actually the first to fly, taking to the air on February 15, 1941.

History:
The war in Europe affected American fighter designers by trying to make the most of the new experience of this battlefield. One of the aircraft on which these efforts were reflected was the Curtiss XP-46. According to the ideas of the chief designer Donovan Berlin, the new aircraft was to replace on the production lines P-40 Tomahawk, which at the time of introduction was outdated compared to European machines.
The new aircraft was smaller with a chassis with a wider gauge, in the leading edges of the wings had automatic slots in the manner of the German Bf 109 and main armament again influenced Hawker Hurricane, so eight were added to the traditional two large-caliber machine guns 7.62 mm machine guns.
On September 29, 1939, a contract was signed for two machines, resulting in one armed XP-46 and one unarmed XP-46A. One month after the completion of the XP-46, the Army Air Force requested the retrofitting of the aircraft with armored pilot protection and installation of efficient self-locking fuel tanks. The second prototype was built in a hurry and thus remained unarmed, without radio and other military equipment. Due to the rush, the second prototype, designated the XP-46A, took off before the first prototype. However, the weight of the aircraft increased so that the aircraft lost dexterity and maneuverability, the performance also did not reach the expected values and so the decision was made to continue with a new version P-40D, mainly so as not to slow down the production of P-40. Soon after, the production of a successful version P-40E, which was XP-46 superior. The Army Air Force therefore ended the matter with this type. The second prototype was left without weapons.
