1. tanková armáda (druhého formovania) bol formovaná od januára do februára 1943 v rámci Severozápadného frontu v oblasti mesta Ostaškov v priamej podriadenosti Hlavného stanu najvyššieho velenia. Veliteľstvo armády bolo vytvorené na základoch veliteľstva 29. armády. Na začiatku boli súčasťou armády 6. tankový zbor, 3. mechanizovaný zbor, 112. samostatná tanková brigáda, 15., 22., 23. lyžiarska brigáda, 11. protilietadlová delostrelecká divízia, štyri samostatné tankové pluky, delostrelectvo a ďalšie samostatné jednotky.


Koncom apríla armáda prešla do podriadenosti Voronežského frontu a zúčastnila sa bitky pri Kursku. V septembri 1943 bola prevelená do zálohy Hlavného stanu najvyššieho velenia, koncom novembra bola zaradená do 1. ukrajinského frontu. Zúčastnila sa Žitomirsko-Berdičevskej a Proskurovsko-Černovickej útočnej operácie. Za vojenské zásluhy bola 25. apríla 1944 armáda premenovaná na 1. gardovú tankovú armádu.
