Poznámka:
Note:
Letoun byl vyjma instalovaného řadového motoru a tím i delšího trupu a vzad posunuté pilotní kabiny shodný s letounem Curtiss P-36 The P-37 was the first attempt to match the existing P-36 (Hawk 75) fighter with a turbo-supercharged Allison liquid cooled inline engine in an effort to improve performance at higher altitudes. Because the supercharger was placed behind the engine, the pilot's cockpit had to be re-located further aft in order to maintain the airplane's balance. The result had a unacceptably detrimental effect on the pilot's view from the cockpit. The resulting aircraft was fast. Powered by the Allison V-1710-11 engine, which gave 1,000 hp at 20,000 feet, it became the first American fighter to reach 300 mph in level flight, reaching a top speed of 340 mph. The turbo-supercharger gave the XP-37 much better performance at altitude than the aircraft that replaced it, the P-40. However, the turbo-supercharger was not yet ready for active service The P-40, which had a less cumbersome gear-driven supercharger and a better pilot's view, was accepted for production instead.

Curtiss XP-37

Brief history:
At the turn of 1936/37, the US Air Force (then USAAC) began to pay more attention to the situation in Europe and also began to compare the design of its own aircraft with European designs, and it was found that its own fighters would probably not stand up completely, and so became interested. o aircraft with in-line engines. At this time, American stellar and twin-star engines no longer guaranteed further performance, and new, more powerful types were still in their infancy. The only suitable in-line engine was the Allison V-1710, so the Curtiss-Wright factory used this engine for its XP-37 prototype. The first takeoff took place in April 1937 (04/37), the aircraft was fast and exceeded the first American aircraft speed of 300 mph. With this statement, however, I described about all the advantages of this aircraft, the other flight characteristics were not good, but Curtiss was given another chance to order thirteen pre-production aircraft YP-37. The first of these aircraft took off in June 1939, the engine was, as with the prototype, supercharged turbocharged, so it was more of a high-altitude fighter aircraft and such aircraft were not yet interested in the Air Force, so it was given priority in production Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk and the XP and YP-37 issue was terminated.
