Some new and additional information about the armour on T-34-85.
In 1944, 5% of hits by "Faust" and "Ofendorf" projectiles were recorded. Therefore, in frontline conditions, according to the relevant regulations, especially before fighting in towns and settlements, tanks were improvised with protection against "Panzerfausts", these "protections" were fixed at a distance of 250 to 600 mm from the actual armour of the hull and turret. All these modifications were carried out by the units' own forces, or even by the crews, from loot and material that was available. [They consisted, that is, almost exclusively, of materials from local sources, that is, almost anything: "shützens" of various types, "wire" dismantled from destroyed German equipment, "wire" from beds, fence posts, sand sieves - "katras", various metal sheets, door and gate leaves (wooden and metal), planks, logs, and sandbags and sandboxes, furniture, empty jerry cans and barrels, as well as loot, armament and equipment of individual crews, all fastened with wires, ropes, or welded in field workshops.]
Although statistics speak of a negligible percentage of casualties caused by cumulative shells, as well as their ineffectiveness at distances greater than 100 m, All tank veterans who have been through the fighting in Europe will confirm to you that a "reasonable fear" of "panzerfaustnik" hidden on rooftops and in the upper floors of houses will justify this action before the expected fighting in cities.
In addition to these improvised protections, there were much more elaborate variants originating in the battalions of repair equipment or units, courtesy of the ROTE, and their creations are documented by photographs from Berlin, in this case the famous T-34-85s fitted with net and wire falseborts, as at least three stand at the Brandenburg Gate. In many publications they are passed off as self-modifications, or even loot, but the new photographs show a certain unification (which, incidentally, has confused many researchers and modellers), ensuring first and foremost the protection of the crew, stored ammunition and tanks.
Another photo is from Louny and shows a bent plate around the turret and brackets welded to the hull, which may have been used to attach the side plates.
It is possible to trace yet another method of protection, using standard "shürtzen", both solid and "Thoma", from PzKpfw IV or PzKpfw V and their derivatives, to protect the T-34-85, using both hinges and elements, of this protection.
However, the introduced armour on the T-34-85 tanks did not become more widespread during the war.
But !!!
T-34-85, was able to penetrate the armor of not only Panther and Tiger tanks. That's why "it was respected - but it couldn't take a precision shot." Like its older brother, the T-34(-76). There was a tradition among German tank crews: "When the T-34 hits the Tiger, it takes off its hat" - meaning the turret of both the T-34(-76) and the T-34-85, which usually flew several meters into the air or flew away after an accurate hit.
For example: on Monday it came out of the factory, on Tuesday it was at the front and on Sunday, at best, it passed through the hands of members of the repair battalion and at worst it was just a pile of scrap.
The average lifespan of a T-34-85 tank was only 7 days!

A little technological note is in order here. From the spring of 1945, Soviet rolling mills began to produce higher quality armour plates, mainly due to the importation of "special components" for rolling armour steel from the United States. These "components" were supplied under loan and lease in late 1943, early 1944. Their influence was seen in the improved armor protection of the T-34-85, T-44, IS-2, IS-3, and other tanks in 1945. This made it unnecessary to increase the thickness of the hull armour, especially the front. (On these "components" and rolling only so much: Therefore, since the T-34-85, vz.44/45, even the bows are welded butt plate to plate, without cast moldings, and in the IS-2, vz.44/45 even "pressed" bows cooked "on a fish.")

The last information about the T-34 tank screening, comes from the final months of the war. In this case, however, it is a forced procedure, as German troops began to make extensive use of the "Faustpatron", "Panzershrek" and "Ofenrohr" anti-tank small arms, which pierced the armour of all RA tanks. This demanded an immediate response.
The Nizhny Novgorod Regional Archive holds rare photographs of Plant N°112 projects, T-34-85 tanks fitted with screens.
In the first variant, it is a factory "side shield" of a half-cylindrical shape, covering the ammunition stored in the turret and the engine and transmission compartments.
The second variant assumes full shielding of the hull sides and turret of the tank. Similar to the T-34 tank, with a 76 mm calibre gun. In order to ensure the view from the turret, downwards and from the visors in the turret sides, windows covered with steel mesh were created in the screens. As an alternative, another variant was presented, in this case the protection of the turret consisted of frames, identical in shape to the screens in the previous project, but covered with steel mesh and supplemented by a DT machine gun, in a hatch located in the rear of the turret, following the model of the heavy tanks of the KV and IS series. A ZIP box could be installed above this hatch, also serving as additional protection.
Another possibility of protection of the rear of the turret was the new placement of additional spare belt links, proposed by plant N° 112 as standard. As this location made it difficult to use the infantry handrail in its original function, this proposal was not officially adopted, but was very often used by the troops. The track links were tucked directly behind the handrail, but with a gap, as most of the time the handrail only allowed the use of two toothed links.
Some of these modifications were later actually used. The ZIP box at the rear of the turret is often found on the T-34 tanks used by the Volksarmee NDR. On the T-34-100 tanks, an entire piece of belt was fixed in these places. However, the archives have not yet released documents on the production or testing of prototypes of such modified tanks, so we do not know if they existed at all. Similar variants were being developed at plant N° 183, but in this case they did not cross the designers' planks.

I add one interesting picture of T -34/85 and Soviet Sherman.
Austrian Alps in the background. The picture was probably taken just after the war.

The T-34/85 inFridrich's photo is from the 25th Tank Corps of the 13th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front. The advance of the corps on the Czech territory was through Žatec, Beroun to Lnari. Here they "took care" of the remnants of the Vlasovites, whom part of the corps cut off at Nepomuk to retreat and capture General Vlasov. Probably this tank is depicted in the drawing on the cover of HPM No.4 (1998) and in the drawing here www.hetzerdog.com .

Interesting T34/85, the turret is factory 183 Nizhny Tagil and the hull is factory 112 Gorky. This is a common phenomenon with machines from post-war repairs in the Czech Republic.

Rare T34/85 from Dukla.
1 - The first three pictures (from bottom) show T34/85 zavod 112 Krasnoye Sormovo with composite turret with separate ventilation mushrooms on the turret ceiling. It is (according to consultations with experts - P.Stepanek) still a war production (4/1945). I haven't seen combat WWII photos of such a modification (separate ventilators), but supposedly they exist. The turret is a very rough casting with up to 1,5cm deep irregularities! The wheels are ribbed, of later design. there are several thick welds on the side of the hull (after repairs?). the tank has MDS smoke gun mounts on the rear armour (in good condition compared to the Death Valley machines Crying or Very sad ) and a towing eye/hitch on the rear armour. It has thicker hinges on the rear sloping armour covering the gearbox and interestingly modified (post-war???) exhausts, unlike the Czechoslovakian post-war production. The turret has a slightly higher slope of the side armour at the rear than the "classic" turrets. It is reported that the method of manufacture made it roomier and larger. In my opinion, it is the only Czech-Slovak (in terms of occurrence) rarity.
2 - The machine assembled from the hull of plant 112 (the same as the previous tank) with the turret of Zavod No.183 Nizhny Tagil so called "flattened". The tank stands on the edge of the forest by the road
3 - Machine Machine assembled from the hull of plant 112 (the same as the previous tanks) with a turret of post-war Czechoslovak production!! The turret is smooth with rounded corners. The tank is standing in Nizna Pisana together with the machine with composite turret. The exhausts are modified in the same way as the "composite" tank! (Top two pictures)

A little about the T-34/85 "603" tank of the 3rd Tank Battalion of the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Tank Brigade

The machine is assigned as part of the 3rd reinforced platoon of the 6th company of the 3rd battalion.
Crew:

Rtn. Karel Šerák
des. Michal Korkobec
svob. Jozef Ivanko
voj. Jozef Súlova
voj. Antonín Žid

Kamo
White 603 is bordered with a thin black line. It was hit several times in the fighting on 25.3.1945. The company commander died in the damaged tank, Lt. Andrej Romani. In the battles from the Ostrava operation to the Albertovec farm, the crew of platoons Palicek, Porazik and Corporal Zamecnik scored eight victories!

To the turret and tank
This is the machine of the 112 Krasnoye Sormovo plant in Gorky. The turret is NOT!!! flattened as may be evident from the poor quality reproductions of the photos. It is a so called composite or sometimes the turret is referred to as "alternative version" The fact that it looks "flattened" on the side is caused by a kind of shadow or dark camouflage paint. It is also possible to have a very rough technological surface treatment. According to the Polish T-34 Mythical Weapon Vol. 2 (which I believe is the T-34 (two-book) cookbook numero uno!!!), the turret was produced from summer to autumn 1944. Probably not in many pieces! The fact that it is a tank from "112" is evidenced by the number of screws on the rear armour, two large hinges (not three smaller ones as in the flattened tanks from the 183 Nizhny Tagil plant). Further evidence is the hinge between the tow hooks on the lower sloping armour at the rear!!! Tanks from "112" have large, or compared to tanks from "183" larger armoured gear covers at the rear of the drive wheels!!! In addition, the "112" are all round, not "square" like the "183". So many differences!!!!

Very rare T-34/85 on the monument in Tiraspol, Transnistria. The turret is probably damaged (?), there is no visor on the turret above the pistol port. The armoured fan shrouds are also missing.
The use of running gear is quite untypical for T-34/85. Two types of all-steel running wheels with internal suspension - older and newer versions (you can tell by the trim of the wheel relief holes) .

T-34/85 participating in the Berlin operation, May 1945. Noteworthy are the makeshift "Schürzen" on the sides of the vehicle and turret, which were a defensive response by the Soviets to the mass use of Panzerfausts. The purpose of this protection was to bring the Panzerfaust's cumulative warhead to detonate before contact with the armour, thus weakening the impact of the cumulative beam on the vehicle's armour.

Most probably one of the first produced "thirty-four" from plant 183 Nizhny Tagil.
It differs from the serial T-34-85s by its carefully cast turret, which at first glance appears very smooth and is free of all later mouldings, irregularities and similar technological concessions. Even the edge of the rear armour of the tub is beveled.

Somewhat rare T-34-85 10th Guards Tank Corps (10th GTS). Even the photos published some time ago by my colleague Smola Petr are of the machines of the 10th GTS. In this photo (www.valka.cz) the number 225 is clearly visible and one can also make out the "staple" under the white stripe, the emblem of the 10th GTS.

Probably it is a sister tank of the same "company?" as machine 212.

Diskuse

I'm looking for an expert on the T-34. I need to find out numbers and exact names of T-34 tank factories. I have learned very different names and sometimes numbering from different publications.
I had assumed that there were these factories :
N.183 (Kharkov)
N.183 (Nizhny Tagil)
No.112 (Gorky)
No.174 (Omsk)
STZ (Stalingrad)
CKZ (Chelyabinsk)
UZTM (Sverdlovsk)

But in the latest Militarii about T-34/76 there is a caption to the photo as follows :
Manufactured T-34 tanks on railway wagons ready for dispatch to the front at Factory 119 (Ural Wagon Factory) in Nizhny Tagil

Query:
In Nizhny Tagil no/was? Plant 119. If in the description the author was wrong about the 112, it is again in Gorky,....I know only the UZTM which stands for Uralsky Zavod Traktorovych Mashin,....Nizhny Tagil had the number 183 (one of the branches of the factory)
So WHERE WERE THE FACTORIES LOCATED AND WHAT WERE THE EXACT NAMES

- ----------

Production factories listed ......with the caveat that guns, screens, motors, etc. were supplied by other factories (e.g. screens by Leningradsky Zavod 28), etc.
E.g:
Plants for the production of engines
No.76
CKZ (Chelyabinsk)
STZ (Stalingrad)
No.76
No.77

I would ask, and I think it's not just me, to show you that rare photo.
Only Krasnoye Sormovo, i.e. plant N°112, claims that they started making this variant after the end of the war in Europe.
They even sometimes mark it as vz.46 and vz.45 is referred to as T-34-85 with one-piece commander's hatch. ?!??Shocked

Added 3.7.09
So I was wondering if he on that rare photo is not T-34-85 vz.43, i.e. with D5T gun from the same manufacturer (Krasnoye Sormovo N°112). The first series had only one fan (the oldest one just behind the forward hatches, the others - sometimes marked as 2nd series, back in the middle, the others already had two). These tanks not infrequently lived to the end of the war, they were even in the condition of our tankers.
What is rather interesting about your photo is that it is a T-34-85K.

Zdravím všechny a popřeji hezkého dne.

2 Colombo: I recommend the book T-34/76 by MBI colleagues Stepanek and Kopecky,....for now there is nothing clearer and better!
-----------------------
Otherwise (if anyone is interested) the T-34/85 with that interesting "schurzen" on the turret with the number "212" from the photo on the first page from Louny 1945 had that plate only on one side!!!

I found another photo of this machine in a set on machines in "insurgent" Prague (about 9th May 1945 or later). The machine was safely identified by my colleague D.Šolc.

Citace - Dolin404 :

To the turret and tank
It is a machine of plant 112 Krasnoye Sormovo in Gorky. The number of screws on the rear armour, two large hinges (not three smaller ones as in the flattened tanks from the 183 Nizhny Tagil plant) are evidence that it is a "112" tank.

According to surviving plates, two types of these turrets were produced. One flattened with no filler around the pistolport as in tank 603 (no shadow on the photo)similar in shape to the turrets from the 183 plant and the other wide with filler around the pistolport on some tanks, however, these filler were removed(probably by autogen).

My information is taken from www.legion-afv.narod.ru. There are lots of photos of surviving machines nicely arranged in columns by factory. Beautifully photographed details just to look at.

Dear colleague,
I took the liberty of merging the text from two columns into one.

To "daniel šín" 3 years ago - This is Czechoslovakian production and I probably wouldn't label it as 1944 model. It has a completely new turret of Czechoslovakian design different from the classic wartime T-34 turrets.
