Grumman Martlet Mk.IV
Grumman Wildcat Mk.IV
The UK received 220 F4F-4Bs in 1942 under the designation Grumman Martlet Mk.IV (the Wildcat Mk.IV name only came into use in January 1944). The machines had a folding wing, Wright Cyclone engines as in the Martlet Mk.I version, and had a shortened engine cowling with a pair of wide flaps and a Hamilton Standard propeller. They served on aircraft carriers in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. They also took part in the capture of Madagascar and in the British-American action in the Solomon Islands in June 1943, operating from the decks of HMS Victorious and USS Saratoga.
