Short history
She was formed on 9 November 1941, as a component of the Southern Expeditionary Army Group, with the task of carrying out the invasion of British Burma.
Under the command of Lt. Gen. Shōjirō Iida, it crosses the Simas border and begins the invasion of Tenasserim. The army initially consists of the 33rd and 55th Infantry Divisions, which attack from northern Siam, with which Japan has signed a friendship agreement of December 21, 1941.
The 15th Army advances rapidly through southern Burma, forcing a retreat of British and Indian troops stationed in the area, and advances towards the capital Rangoon, which it captures on 7 March 1942.
The army is reinforced by troops made available after the fall of Singapore and these advance northwards into central Burma, defeating the British Burma Corps and Chinese troops on the advance, and the remnants of these are pushed out of Burma.
During the following year, 1943, the Army stays in Burma as a standing force, repelling the Allied offensive in Arakan and inflicting heavy casualties on the assault forces of the Deep Penetration Force under the command of Gen. Orde Wingate.
In 1944, the 15th Army becomes part of the Army of the Burma Zone. Lt. Gen. Iida is called back to Japan and command of the army is assumed by Lt. Gen. Renya Mutaguchi. The latter immediately upon assuming command began advocating a plan for an offensive against British India.
The offensive, Operation U-Go, was launched in March 1944. The result of the offensive was disastrous. Due to poor logistics as well as Mutaguchi's underestimation of the potential difficulties of this offensive, the 15th Army is more or less destroyed in the Battle of Imphal and naśledne in the Battle of Kohima.
Mutaguchi, his chief of staff and some other officers are replaced in command after the failure of the offensive, and Lt. Gen. Shihachi Katamura as in charge of the command.
By the time the monsoon season is over, the remainder of the 15th Army attempts to stop the Allied offensive by retreating behind the Irrawaddy River. However, even here the army is unable to prevent British and Indian troops from capturing the bridgeheads on the other bank. The army at this time is considerably weakened, and this is also due to various detachments in other parts of the front.
When Mandalay is occupied by the Allies, the 15th Army is left with no option but to retreat south, which it does in a highly disorganised fashion.
Subsequently, the remainder of the 15th Army is absorbed by the 18th Zone Army as a support element.
The 15th Army is demobilized in Lampang Province, Thailand, after the Japanese surrender in 1945. source en.wikipedia.org http://pwencycl.kgbudge.com/index.htm
