Generalleutnant Walter Hagen


Born 16.3.1897 in Kiel.


In 1915 he joined the Hussars as a one-year volunteer. 1917 he achieved his transfer to the 1st Naval Aviation Department, followed by combat flights in the Flanders area.
After WWI from 1924 he was a factory pilot at Junkers. 1935 he joined the Luftwaffe with the rank of Captain in the Reserves, where he first served in the Air Ministry and then with the rank of Major in 1938 he founded I./St.G. 186 (T) and subsequently commanded it. He continued to command the group after it was renamed III./StG 1, where he subsequently became commodore of the squadron until 30 March 1943.
21.7.1940 awarded the Knight's Cross. As a Lieutenant Colonel he received the Oak Leaf Cluster on 17.2.1942.
After that he was in the rank of colonel commander StG 3 in Africa.
At the rank of major general he was commander of the air forces in Serbia, and the end of the war found him at the rank of lieutenant general as commander of the 17th Air Division.
He died 24.11.1963 in Keil
