Major Ivan I. Babak

* 26.7.1919, Alexeyevka

He learned to fly in Zaporozhye Aero Club. In 1940 he was accepted to the Stalingrad Military Aviation School, which he graduated from in May 1942 and was assigned to 45. IAP. Here he won his first three victories in the Yak-1. From October 1942, the regiment rearmed to P-40 and returned to the front in February 1943. Babak then flew frequently as the number D. B. Glinka. He took part in the fighting over Kubani, after which the regiment was rearmed to P-39. This was followed by battles over the Sea of Azov, near Mariupol and over the Donbas. On November 1, 1943, he was awarded the title HSS and in April 1944 became deputy commander of 100. GIAP, as he was 45. IAP was renamed. At that time, Babak flew the P-39 with the dedication inscription "From the pupils of Mariupol". In January 1945, he became commander of the 16th GIAP. On March 16, 1945 he attacked a freight train,but his P-39 was hit and he had to parachute out. He then spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp. After returning from captivity he was demoted and punished because he did not comply with the regulation that a soldier must not fall into captivity! He was saved only by the intervention of A. Pokryshkin and Babak was able to return to the Air Force.

During the war, he flew a total of 330 combat sorties and won 35+5 victories in 103 battles. After the war he was a teacher in Poltava.

To add:
In 1940, at the same time as the aeroclub, he graduated from the Zaporozhye Pedagogical Institute (Запорожский педагогический институт) and began working as a chemistry and biology teacher. He would continue to work as a teacher after leaving the army in the post-war years. After the invasion of the USSR, he joined the army and after graduating from the Stalingrad Aviation School (Сталинградская военная авиационная школа), he arrived at the front in May 1942.

Hero of the USSR Ivan Ilyich Babak died on 24 June 2001. He is buried in Poltava at the Central Cemetery. His name is borne by the pioneer detachments in the cities of Poltava and Alexeyevka, as well as by the school in the settlement of Yuzhnyj in the Baranov region - places connected with his life and wartime fate.

The number of Babak's victories is given variously - usually in the numbers 34 + 4, 35 + 4, 37 + 4 and 39 + 4.
Information from Babak's commemorative book Stars on Wings (Звёзды на крыльях) can be found at math.fce.vutbr.cz, which lists a total of 11 confirmed victories, 10 solo and 1 in collaboration.

Even 2 pictures Aerokobry tactical no 40 and the serial no (4)1 – 38416, provided by the Ju. And. Moiseevym (Ю. А. Моисеев ), which in the years 2. world war he served as vyhodnocovač aerial images at 366. ORAP (164. OGRAP) /366-й ОРАП /164-й ОГРАП/. In his view originated in the days of air battle in the Kuban, and this either at the airport Paškovskaja or Slavjanskaja (Пашковская, Славянская). The author of the images is fotolaborant of the same regiment Nikolai Šajkinyj (Николай Шайкиный).
Of information (CAMO fund 45. IAP, the Book warrants 45. IAP in 1943 r. and inventory 296938 d. 1 - ЦАМО фонд 45-го ИАП, Книга приказов по 45 ИАП за 1943г. и опись 296938 д.1), it follows that 26. 4. 1943 the aircraft P - 39D2 "Aerokobra" serial no (4)1 - 38416 (the first number on the aeroplánu traditionally does not), suffered an accident pilot lieutenant Babak. The command of the 28. 4. 43 this machine, along with two other planes, included in the 16. GIAP, for damage to the removed from combat status.
Documented is only that Ivan Ilyich Babak suffered an accident on this machine. But this does not mean that it has reached its "kubáňská" victory. At the same time it is also not out of the question.
Unfortunately, at a time when the Russian spring these photos of the treats, because of the illness of Ivan Ilyich Babaka already failed to clarify the details of, and copies of aeronautical books, kindly supplied by his son, contain the later period of the combat activities of this pilot.

note
According to the memories And. I. Pokryškina was Babak reportedly in a prison camp in Czechoslovakia, where it Pokryškin personally picked up.

Image Bell P-39N-0 Airacobra, serial No. (4) 29033, on which flew gvardii captain II Babak in the 100th Guards Fighter Air Regiment in May 1945, Germany.
On the fuselage behind the cabin is the inscription "from schoolchildren Mariupola" ( ОТ ШКОЛЬНИКОВ Мариуполя). This is an aircraft for which the inhabitants of Mariupola raised funds. It was an expression of gratitude for rescuing the Mariupol girls, who the Germans tried to transport to Germany. On Monday, September 6, 1943, however, Babak, flying on his Airacobre, hit the steam locomotive of a train carrying girls with an accurate dose, thus preventing them from being taken to the Empire.
