Origin and development
As early as 1939, Krupp attempted to design a new Sturmgeschütz mit 8,8cm (8,8cm Flak auf Sonderfahrgestell (Pz.Sfl.IVc)), which yielded a single prototype. This type did not live up to expectations, and so as early as 9/1941 there was a discussion between Krupp and WaPrüf 6 about a new design for a heavy armored self-propelled gun. Drawings of the new design Pz.Sfl. IVc2 mit 8,8cm L/71 Geschütz zur Begleitung der Infanterie, as this new machine was called, were submitted in 1/1942. It was a pair of designs that differed in the engine used. The choices were a Deutz-Stern diesel engine or a Maybach HL 90 petrol engine. Due to the already established production of Maybach HL 90 engines, the latter was the preferred motorization. Depending on the industrial production capability, the type of chassis suspension was considered between torsion bar suspension or leaf springs. The advantage of torsion bar suspension was a 100 mm lower vehicle height.

On 2.4.1942, a wooden model of the Pz.Sfl.IVc2 was demonstrated by a representative of WaPrüf 6. The latter made their amending demands, which the designers had to take into account. The contract for the trio of prototypes, which bore the changed designation Pz.Sfl. IVd was awarded on 4 June 1942. However, Krupp announced that due to the company's capacity constraints in the production of Pz.Kpfw. IV is considering outsourcing the prototypes to Deutsche Stahlindustrie in Mühlheim. During the communication about who was to be involved in the production of the structural parts of the prototypes, a radical change came from WaPrüf 6 on 3.8.1942 regarding what platform was to be used. The choice fell on the medium tank under development Pz.Kpfw. V Panther. At the 9/1942 discussion of a new tank fighter design using the Panther tank platform, a number of refining specifications were dropped. In late 9/1942, the designs were presented to Adolf Hitler, who sanctified the development and production. The original name Sturmgeschütz (assault gun) was changed to Panzerjäger (tank fighter). On 15 October 1942, Daimler-Benz was commissioned to continue the development work, with plans to begin series production in the summer of 1943. The firm Krupp was the supervising firm to produce a 1:1 scale wooden model of the tank fighter by 11/1942.
During the WaPrüf 6 inspections of 11/24/1942 and 5/1/1943, various modifications to the design were requested. The most notable was the change of the platform. The original design used the VK 30.02 (M) platform, which was the classic Panther I (Ausf.D). As a successor to the Panther I was already in the works by the time the Panther I's development was completed and mass production started, Panther II, the design of the later Jagdpanther was adapted to this planned successor. The armouring of the individual parts of the machine and their shape was based on the design of the Panther II, i.e. e.g. the frontal armour was to have a thickness of 100 mm and the side hull shape was not of the broken shape of the Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.D, but was to have a straight edge like the Panther II or the later Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.G. After the cancellation of the planned production of the Panther II on 4 May 1943, the company's newly developed concept Daimler-Benz had to be redesigned again to the Panther I standard. However, the project used some design modifications Panther II.
Further work on the project continued in cooperation with Miag, which was selected as the main manufacturer of this tank fighter. The original thickness of the superstructure roof was reduced from 30 to 16 mm, the gun was moved 50 mm to the right of the axis of the machine, the lateral aim of the gun was reduced from 14° to 12° to either side, the position of the gun recoil damper was changed, and this increased the gun's aim to 24°. The originally intended number of men in the fighter's crew was six, but due to the increase in the cannon's ammunition supply, the crew was reduced to five men. The number of periscopes on the superstructure roof was also reduced from five to four (two fixed and two swivel). The company Daimler-Benz made a wooden model in M 1:1 scale. It was sent to Miag on 15.6.1943. This model was presented to Adolf Hitler on 20.10.1943.

The first prototype Fgst.Nr.V101 was completed in 10/1943, the second prototype Fgst.Nr.V102 in 11/1943.

Production
Three companies (Mühlenbau-und-Industrie-AG, Maschinenfabrik-Niedersachsen and Maschinenfabrik Bahn Bedarf) were entrusted with the production of the tank fighters. The production of armoured hulls was handled by a single firm, Brandenburger Eisenwerke (Kirschmöser) in Brandenburg an der Havel. Serial numbers started from Wanne.Nr.300001, as did the Fgst.Nr.300001 chassis, but the assembly of the Jadpanther did not strictly follow the same serial numbers (especially in later production). The highest known hull serial number was Wanne Nr.300795, meaning that only about half of the hulls produced saw completion into a full tank fighter. Several photographs of a number of in-progress and incomplete hull welds are known to exist. Production of the fighters often stalled due to air raids, power outages, or lack of manpower.

1) - The total number of Jagdpanthers produced at the MNH factory was 112 units. Reports on monthly productions have not been preserved.

Construction description
There were constant modifications during the Jagdpanther's production. The first 50 fighters had a superstructure ceiling made of 16 mm thick armour plate. The next production received 25 mm thick armour plates. At least three forms of Kugelblende, three forms of driver's periscope covers, are known. The gun guard recess (4 types), the swing arm stops (4 types), the schurzen hinges were of a different design at Miag, others at M, underwent development.N.H., the antenna mounting base was modified, etc. The company Miag assembled for part of the production (Fgst.Nr.300026-300100) different stops for the upper swingarm pivot at 1st position on both sides.

The chassis was taken from the classic Panther. Of interest to modellers is the use of three different types of swing arms for the running wheels, something not considered by many model manufacturers.

Interestingly, the serial numbers of the tubs (Wanne Nr.) and the serial numbers of the completed chassis (Fgst.Nr.) were identical for the first batch of 50 tank fighters, i.e. e.g. Fgst.Nr.300022 had a tub of Wanne Nr.300022. For the next production this was no longer the rule and tubs were used according to availability and the serial numbers of the chassis and the tubs tended to be different. The serial numbers of the Ausf.G1 tubs were Wanne Nr.300001-300300. The serial numbers of the Ausf.G2 tubs were Wanne Nr.300301-300795 (300795 being the highest serial number identified for a tub to date).

Two basic versions of the Jagdpanther are known, the Ausf.G1 and Ausf.G2.
The Ausf.G1 modification had a rear hull top consisting of a hatch, air inlets and outlets, filler holes, etc. taken from Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.A. It was produced in parallel with the Ausf.G2 version until the end of the war.
The Ausf.G2 modification had the rear hull top consisting of a hatch, air inlets and outlets, filler holes, etc. taken and modified from Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.G (they were not identical).

Due to the different length of this part, the slope of the rear part of the superstructure was different for both versions. Thus, this difference also influenced the shape and dimensions of the sides of the superstructure. However, these differences affected the overall length of the Jagdpanther. This modification reflected internal changes to the cooling system taken from the Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.G tank. From 5/1944 onwards, Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.G tanks began to be fitted with a welded, square-shaped cover instead of the rounded cast armoured exhaust outlet cover. However, the Jagdpanther machines only received such a cover at the end of production.
As a precaution against the loss of tools carried on external slings welded into the front of the body sides, these slings were removed and most of the tools were moved to the rear compartments of the vehicle. On the right side of the machine the mounting of the wooden jack pad remained, on the left side the mounting of the tube with the gun cleaning rods remained. The tube was often moved by the crew to the rear of the engine hatch. On the sides of the machine, only the grips for the tow ropes and the grips for the spare track links remained.
Many of the modifications and modification requirements were introduced and requested to be put into production by members of schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654, who were the first unit to receive Jagdpanther fighters. There was an inventory of required modifications drawn up by the unit commander Hauptmann Noak (dated 25 July 1944), some of which were later put into series production.
I will only mention some characteristic modifications carried out in the repair units schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654:
- installation of the box on the left rear body armour
- dismantling the welded gear racks on the sides of the superstructure and moving the gear to the rear of the fighter. This solution prevented the loss of gear. The front tow rope grip was retained.
- fitting the protective collar around the gun sight
- Blanking of the driver's left observation periscope

Official production modifications:

Date the modification was introduced
Type of modification (description)
3/1944
A trio of mounts for the EM 0.9m R rangefinder began to be installed on the roof of the superstructure in front of the charger hatch.
4/1944
Parallel to the assembly of the monobloc gun, the Pak 43/3 gun with a stepped barrel began to be assembled from this period onwards. The monoblock gun had a weight used to balance it, which was bolted to the protective cover at the gun's breech. The use of a monoblock barrel is documented even from 10/1944. The cannon with a stepped barrel had a spring to balance the cannon. The volume of the hydraulic brake reservoir for damping recoil when firing was increased from 5.1 litres to 6 litres.
5/1944
A towing device for hauling away broken equipment by means of a tow bar began to be mounted on the cover of the service entrance to the engine. The original 15 ton hoist mounted horizontally under the exhausts was replaced by a 20 ton hoist mounted vertically between the exhausts.
6/1944
The left of the pair of driver's observation periscopes was eliminated. The hole left by the periscope was welded shut with 5mm thick sheet metal. The rain gutter above the driver's periscopes in the shape of an inverted "V" was changed to a simple sloping gutter from this change. The eaves were removed in 7/1944. The hitherto used "heavy" stretch brake (Mündungsbremse 05B3801-22 intended for the 8.8 cm Kw.K.36 and 8.8 cm Pak 43/2) began to be replaced by a lighter and smaller version (M8.8 05St0816-001 intended for the 8.8 cm PaK 43/41). A new larger tensioning wheel, which was designed to be self-cleaning, was started to be fitted. The original recess to protect the gun's armour (Geschütznische 021B51244), which was fixed with pins and screws in the interior, was replaced from this time on by a modified type (Geschütznische 021B51251), which was attached to the frontal armour with two squares of screws.
7/1944
The
Kgs 64/640/160 belts made by August Engels Eisengiesserei, Werk Dellingsen (manufacturer code "crg") received a small spike/profile on the left end. Due to the lack of supply of the Nahverteidigungswaffe defensive weapon, many machines built before 6/1944 had the mounting hole for this weapon blinded by an armoured round cover screwed on with a square bolt. From 7/1944 onwards, deliveries improved and the mounting of the Nahverteidigungswaffe became standard. From Fgst.Nr.300051 onwards, the superstructure roof was made of 25 mm thick armour. The thickness of the base for the vehicle commander's swivel periscope was also increased from 20 mm to 25 mm. The original commander's and charger's hatches had a single lock, from this period onwards hatches with a pair of locks began to be fitted. The original periscope guards had a height of 110 mm, after the new one the height was reduced to 100 mm. The original pair of exhausts consisted of a separate exhaust pipe. From this period onwards, a pair of additional exhaust pipes were fitted to the left exhaust to assist in cooling the left half of the engine (the cylinders on the left side). This exhaust modification was eliminated with the Ausf.G2 version, which had a modified cooling system. Probably from this period onwards, a handrail started to be mounted on the large hatch at the rear of the superstructure (the handrail was in a horizontal position).
8/1944
The "
Topfblende[/col]Topfblende[/col]" gun shield began to be pre-drilled on its top for the attachment of a hinge eye, which greatly facilitated the handling of this heavy cover during its assembly and disassembly.
9/1944
The
application of zimmerite antimagnetic paste stopped. The fan blades providing engine cooling were modified/strengthened. Vehicles equipped with such fans had a small red cross on the inlet grille covers. Modified timing boxes were fitted; the original ones were malfunctioning.
10/1944
The recess to protect the gun's breech was modified again (Geschütznische 021B51251). Its thickness and shape were changed. Later, larger holes for the bolt heads were drilled in the bottom of the cover to facilitate access to them during assembly (90 mm vs. 115 mm). The shape of the firing range for the Kugelblende machine gun was modified. It was originally designed so that the smooth slip of the bore caused reflected rounds to strike the machine gun barrel. A modification was that the bore was given a stepped shape that no longer deflected bullets. Towards the end of production, this cover was again modified; it was slightly larger and had a slightly flattened shape. At Miag, the handles for the 2-ton auxiliary crane (Pilze) began to be welded onto the superstructure ceiling. The company M.N.H. never assembled these handles. On 31.10.1944 it was ordered not to paint the tank interiors, the exterior base colour was to become a basic red-brown (Rotbraun RAL 8017). The complementary colours were to be Olivegrün RAL 6003 and Dunkelgelb RAL 7028. In case of a shortage of Dunkelgelb RAL 7028, stocks of the older camouflage paint Dunkelgrau RAL 7021 could be used. At the end of this month, the installation of the protective sheet metal cover for the exhaust manifold began, which was to prevent the machine from being detected at night, which was betrayed by the glowing pipes. For the Ausf.G2 version, the fitting of an exhaust silencer began, which reliably eliminated the nighttime unmasking caused by the glowing exhaust pipes. Later, the muffler was modified by fitting yet another curved pipe, which probably eliminated the machine's detection from aircraft (?). However, this silencer can also be found on the Ausf.G1 version. A new system for heating the crew compartment in winter began to be fitted. A characteristic feature of this system is the raised fan shroud on the left side. The original fan blowing warm air from the radiator was then returned through the ducting in this casing into the ducting network to the crew compartment and the batteries. This was followed by a modification whereby armoured caps (segments) were fitted over this raised fan housing to regulate the flow of the blowing air. This allowed the heating temperature to be regulated. This system also included the fitting of sliding airflow regulating caps over the rectangular air inlets on the right hand side.
11/1944
The
The protective sheet metal cover for the driver's periscope was enlarged from a width of 206 to 226 mm. During this period, 80 skeletons were delivered to M.N.H. by Miag, of which ten superstructures had the position of the ventilation inlet changed. This was located in front of the superstructure roof above the gun (known Fgst.Nos. 303003, 303006, 303011, 303012, 303016, 303017, 303018, 303019 and 303020). The distinguishing features of this small series were the oppositely mounted charger and commander's hatches, they had a left fender with a cut-out for a shovel. The M.N.H. vehicles did not have handles for the folding crane (Pilze). The handle of the large hatch at the rear of the superstructure was mounted vertically. The M.N.H. fitted their fighters with a different configuration of fenders mounted along the length of the vehicle (6-piece). The Miag also produced fighters with the fan moved above the gun in front of the superstructure ceiling, depending on what skeletons they received from the manufacturers. Miag fitted a different configuration of fenders mounted along the length of the vehicle (4-piece, without a cutout for the scoop) to their fighters. Probably from this period onwards, a handrail began to be fitted to the large hatch at the rear of the superstructure. The handrail was in a vertical position (M.N.H.).
12/1944
The
M.N.H. M.N.H. reports that tubs with a single hole for the driver's observation periscope have begun to be produced. Production of such tubs was introduced sometime around the time of the production of Wanne.Nr.300186 - Wanne.Nr.300294. A report M.N.H. dated 20.12.1944 mentions the introduction of changes from the 31st Jagdpanther produced by this firm (Fgst.Nr.303031). These included a change in the radio magazine arrangement (moved forward in place of the fixed MP machine gun, machine gun barrel and three pouch magazines for machine gun ammunition), the deletion of one magazine for 3 rounds of cannon ammunition in the front, and the deletion of one of the pair of charger seats. The original commander's seat was intended for the radio operator, the commander was given a new seat.
1/1945

2/1945
The
It was probably at this time that the die-cast glide foot began to be fitted, replacing the support pulley mounted in the rear of the armoured drive wheel cover. Such a foot is known from Fgst.Nr.303091 and 303101 (M.N.H.). Due to the lack of material and equipment lockers mounted on the rear hull armour, some Jagdpanther Ausf.G1 fighters were delivered without them. Re-painting of the interior walls and superstructure roof with ivory paint was introduced. The remaining parts were unpainted or were in the basic red oxide colour.
3/1945
The
Dunkelgrün was to become the basic camouflage paint from 1/3/1945. However, as long as stocks of the old camouflage colours were available they could be used until 30.5.1945. From 1.6.1945, however, this regulation on the new camouflage colour was to be fully implemented in series production.
4/1945
The new centre drive wheel covers began to be fitted, which were held in place by a quartet of bolts. A modified Kugelblende with a flattened shape (Fgst.Nr.303101) began to be fitted. At M.N.H., the fitting of storage boxes on the rear hull armour with five vertical mouldings began (the standard boxes had a pair of mouldings in a cross).

A very unconventional adaptation of Jagdpanter. It is a test at the Mühlenbau- und Industrieaktiengesellschaft (MIAG).

So some more pictures of Jagdpanther, which was to be restored in the UK to a mobile condition. The wreck was to be discovered in an unnamed military area, and after rescue it was transported to a museum, where work began on it, at the end of which the mobile was to be unique.
You can see how the work was done and how it went in the photos. Since the piece found had no armament, it had to be taken from another piece, or rather a piece that has survived. That it was not an easy job can be seen from the photos, but the result is worth it !!!!! Even today he can find something that has been forgotten.

This beautiful jagdpanter late also appeared in one thread on the RM server. The machine should be from Kassel 1945. Camouflage striped.

(I have a photo at home with this label of a longer house, but when it's outside elsewhere, ....)
