At the time of the light self-propelled gun's SU-76M mass production run, a project using the T-60 platform as a carrier for the ZIS-3 76.2 mm gun (model 1942 L/41.5) was developed sometime in the autumn/autumn of 1943.
The design of the OSA-76 light self-propelled gun was developed at Plant No.38, and work on the project was directed by chief designers Chirkov and Mizonov. This self-propelled gun was part of the "OSA" program (Общевойковая cамоходная арллерия). In several sources this self-propelled gun is also referred to as "OSA-76", but later the type was renamed "OSU-76".
In the summer of 1944, three (five ?) prototypes were made, which underwent intensive tests on test polygons, but the type was not approved for series production. The crew was to consist of three men. The driver had his station on the right side of the machine, to the left of the gun sat the commander/gunner, behind the gun was the loader. The cannon had a bearing of -5° to +12°, the side measurement was 10° to either side. For the gun, 30 rounds of ammunition were loaded, additional armament consisted of a PPŠ-41 submachine gun with 426 rounds. The machine was powered by a 4-stroke four-cylinder GAZ-M1 (50 hp). The fuel supply was 120 litres, with which the machine had a range of about 220 km. The maximum speed was about 41 km/h. All other components came from the light tank T-60.
This type was appreciated for its simplicity, low profile and weight, which predestined its use in e.g. airborne operations. The drawback was the underpowered engine and the lack of a more powerful six-cylinder powerplant.
Mass production did not take place also because the machine showed instability when firing. The T-60 chassis was not massive enough to absorb the shock of firing. The angular wobble was 1.5 times that of the SU-76M.
