73rd Operational Training Unit (Middle East)


The unit was established in November 1941 in Sheik Othman, Aden, due to lack of personnel, began training in January 1942. It became the main unit, which underwent operational training fighters for squadrons of the Desert Air Force. The unit was equipped with aircraft Hurricane and Mohawk, which were gradually supplemented by aircraft, such as P-40, Harvard, Spitfire a P-47.
After the Japanese entry into the war, a unit armed with Mohawks was created at the unit, which was to defend Aden from a possible attack by aircraft from Japanese aircraft carriers. In May 1942, he exchanged his Mohawks for Hurricanes, and in October he was removed from the 73rd OTU, which was abolished in November, but re-formed in El Ballah Egypt the same month. In February 1943, she moved to Abu Sueir and, in addition to the fighter, also provided fighter-bomber training. In May 1944 she moved to Fayid, where she was also dissolved on September 25, 1945.
