History
The Magach 6 tanks are [url=/topic/view/42759/ISR-Israel-Defense-Forces-IDF]Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) referred to as upgraded and often greatly improved M60 series tanks : M60 / M60A1 / M60A3. These were shipped to Israel from the United States of America (U.S.A.) in the 1970s, totaling about 1,400 units. There, after the experience gained in upgrading the M48 tanks to the Magach 3 and Magach 5 types, the M60 Patton series tanks also underwent a modernization process that significantly increased their ability to survive on the battlefield then and, to some extent, now.

Description
The modifications included the gradual improvement of the tank's armour (first by installing reactive armour, later modern passive armour), the installation of newer and more powerful power units along with gearboxes, and of course the improvement of the tank's electronic systems and software (radio equipment, fire control system).
As is the case with other tanks used by the Israeli army, the Magach 6 series tanks are swarming with turret-mounted machine guns. However, as with all Israeli machines, the machine guns, described as anti-aircraft, are used to suppress uncovered enemy live forces. These are two FN MAG / M240 machine guns in 7.62 mm calibre which are mounted at the commander's and loader's hatches. A large-calibre machine gun M2HB in 12.7 mm calibre is mounted on the barrel cradle. This is coupled to the gun and firing is controlled remotely from inside the tank (on newer versions).

Version

- Magach 6 : tanks M60A1. Supplemented with the low profile "Urdan" turret and, on some, Blazer ERA reactive armour. Introduced around the 1970s.

- Magach 6A ( Alef ) : further upgraded version of the M60A1 tank. Additional Blazer ERA reactive armor was added and two smoke grenade launchers are present on the turret nose.

- The Magach 6B ( Bet ) : an upgraded version of the M60A1 tank with the AVDS-1790-2C RISE (Reliability Improved Selected Equipment) engine. Other additional equipment includes a thermal jacket for the barrel of the M68 105 mm gun and tracks from the Merkava Mk.1 tank.

- Magach 6B Gal ( Bet Gal ) : Magach 6B tank with "GAL" fire control system, new thermal insulation jacket and new storage basket at the rear of the turret.

- The Magach 6B Gal Batash ( Bet Gal Batash ) : the most advanced tank in the Magach series. It is an upgraded version of the Magach 6B Gal tank. The difference from the other versions of the Magach 6 type is that specially shaped profiles of the 4th generation passive armor are attached to the turret, giving it a completely different look and of course superior protection. The turret has sloping sides and a sloping muzzle shield. There is also a side armour plate which protects part of the tank's running gear. It is equipped with a very newer 908 hp engine. This variant is sometimes unofficially referred to as the Magach 7D or Magach 8.

- Magach 6C ( Gimel ) : an upgraded M60A3. Machines of this model series were acquired in the late 1980s in numbers of 150.

- The Magach 6R ( Resh ) : an upgraded M60A1 (RISE), with an improved AVDS-1790-2AG engine (with a more powerful power generator than the AVDS-1790-2A) and Blazer ERA reactive armour.

- The Magach 6R* ( Resh* ) : version of the Magach 6R with preparation for mounting the "Nachal Oz" fire control system.

- Magach 6M ( Mem ) : the name used for the versions of the Magach 6A ( Alef ) tank fitted with the "Nachal Oz" fire control system, thermal insulation gun mantle and tracks from the Merkava Mk.1 tank.
