Popis

Biplane with wings of unequal length, the lower wing smaller. The wings are of wooden construction covered with canvas. Rectangular hull of rectangular diameter, perched on the lower wing. Two-wheel chassis with auxiliary skis against rolling and a spur at the stern. 150 hp RAF 4a or 160 hp Beardmore engine. The engine was located in the front part of the fuselage and powered by a two-bladed propeller. Open cockpits - the observer sat in the front under the upper wing, the pilot in the back. According to [1], some machines were also converted to three-seaters.

The initial order was for 500 units. Production was carried out simultaneously in several factories, which produced: 50 - Coventry Ordnance Works, 30 - Austin, 50 - Napier, 100 - Siddeley-Deasey. In total, according to sources, 230 - 250 R.E.7 aircraft were produced.

Two machines, No.2299 (built by Napier) and No.2348 (Siddeley-Deasy) were converted to three-seaters, with a gunnery range behind the cockpit, in an attempt to improve defensibility. Due to the increased weight, the former received a 186kW Rolls-Royce Eagle engine, the latter a 119kW Berdmore. Neither proved suitable for normal operation and no further three-seat R.E.7s are likely to be built.
The drawing is of a standard R.E.7 with a Beardmore engine.
