10th Airborne Corps (1st forming)

10-й воздушно-десантный корпус - I. формирование

The corps was first formed in October 1941 at Krasny Yar in the Saratov oblast on the basis of the order of the People's Commissar of Defense of the USSR No. 0083 of 4 September 1941 "On the development of the airborne troops of the Red Army". There were about 10,000 men in the corps, 90 percent of the fighters were Communists and Komsomol members. The corps was made up of men born in 1922 who were from Siberia and the Urals and who volunteered for the airborne troops at the call of the Central Committee of the Komsomol (the Soviet youth organization). The commander of the corps was appointed colonel Nikolai Petrovich Ivanov, who was promoted to the rank of general-major on January 19, 1942.

The units immediately began combat training. The paratroopers mastered weapons and combat techniques from morning to evening. In early December 1941, the corps was moved to the Vnukovo station of the Moscow-Kiev railway on the territory of the Moscow Military District. Here there was a better material base and intensive combat training of paratroopers began immediately. Every month the load on the yearlings increased, including the physical one. By April 1942, each paratrooper had made 5-6 practice parachute jumps.

In May 1942, the 23rd Airborne Brigade of the Corps took part in an airborne operation to help bring out the remnants of General P. A. Belov from the encirclement. Over three nights from 29 May to 3 June, the 23rd Airborne Brigade, along with the 211th Airborne Brigade of the 1st Airborne Corps, was dropped behind German lines from the Vnukovo airfield. The brigade operated in the vanguard of the 4th Airborne Corps and conducted a major, 200-kilometre sweep through the enemy's silence, with daily battles, heavy night crossings through forests and swamps. On 26 June 1942, the paratroopers managed to break the encirclement and reach the village of Žilino. The brigade then rejoined the 10th Airborne Corps.

Based on the order STAVKA No. Org/2/786742 of 2 August 1942, the 10th Airborne Corps (1st Formation) was reorganized into the 41st Guards Rifle Division between 3 and 7 August 1942. The 23rd Airborne Brigade was formed into the 122nd Guards Airborne Regiment, the 24th Airborne Brigade was reformed into the 124th Guards Airborne Regiment, and the 25th Airborne Brigade was reformed into the 126th Guards Airborne Regiment.
