The 312th NATO Radiation Chemical and Biological Protection Battalion is a specialised NATO unit that was established in December 2003 to provide protection against weapons of mass destruction to deployed NATO forces. It is a multinational unit that is part of the NATO Rapid Reaction Force. Its command rotates among the different NATO nations, and its components are likewise drawn from different NATO armies. In the case of the so-called Lead Nation Czech Republic, the battalion is led in the structures of the Czech Armed Forces as the 312th NATO Radiation Chemical and Biological Protection Battalion - the first time it was in the period 01.12.2003 to 15.01.2003.2005 (the battalion itself was part of NRF-3 from 01.07.2004-13.01.2005, a RCHB reconnaissance platoon was allocated to NRF-1 (15.10.2003-15.01.2004) and NRF-2 (01.01.2004-30.06.2004)), subsequently the command was taken over by Germany (NRF-4 was without the participation of the Czech Armed Forces). Lieutenant Colonel Vratislav Osvald was responsible for the construction of the battalion and its first commander.

In the following period, chemical warfare specialists were allocated to NRF-5 (01.07.2005-15.01.2006, RCHB reconnaissance platoon), NRF-8 (01.01.2007-15.07.2007,battalion headquarters and other specialized units, total 400 persons) and NRF-9 (01.01.2007-15.07.2007, battalion headquarters and other specialized units, total 400 persons).07.2007-15.01.2008, only a small contingent to the assessment team), NRF-12 to NRF-15 (01.01.2009-15.01.2011, generally 2-3 hundred persons outside NRF-13, where participation was only token).
