Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf A (Sd Kfz 101) was also referred to as LaS or MG Panzerwagen (Vs Kfz 617). The individual chassis produced had serial numbers 9000-10477. The tank was equipped with a TZF2 sight and FuG2 radio. It was the first German tank to be mass produced. Initially, a production order of 135 units was placed by Krupp, which was later expanded by another 450 units in January 1934.

The tank used the same chassis as the driver training vehicle Pz.Kpfw. I Ausf A ohne Aufbau, with the chassis being covered above waist level by an armoured superstructure on which the turret was eccentrically placed (on the right side), allowing a hatch to be placed for the driver's entry (on the left side next to the turret). A pair of machine guns were coupled and were located in front of the turret. Although the tank's crew was only two-seated, a total of 11 firing positions (6 x turret, 5 x hull) were created in the hull and turret for small arms fire. The original design of the chassis caused the engine to overheat, which was solved by redesigning the armoured engine cowling and adding a pair of fans exhausting the overheated air from the radiator outside the engine compartment (at the rear of the tank).

The first Pz I Ausf A was inducted into service in September 1934. By July 1935, 475 had already been delivered. The tanks made it possible to form the basis of the Wehrmacht's tank forces and, together with the Pz I Ausf A ohne Aufbau training Pz I Ausf A ohne Aufbau, were involved in the training of tank crews. In 1939 and 1940 these tanks were in the armament of all German tank units and took an active part in the fighting in Poland and France. They also took part in the invasions of Norway and Denmark in the Pz-Abt 40 formation. In late 1940 and early 1941 they began to be taken out of the armament of the main combat units and in 1941 they fought only in Finland and North Africa.

I'm adding what I've found so far. I have about 20 more, but I don't feel like playing with it right now.

Pz.Kpfw. I Ausf. (©Radek Havelka)
