The original order for 6./Z.W. (Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.G) from 1937 was for 800 tanks. Due to problems with the Maybach gearbox, it was reduced to 600 tanks in 1939. The actual production ran concurrently with the Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.F and Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.H versions. From 6/1940, the 5 cm gun, including a new shield from the Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.H version, began to be fitted instead of the 3.7 cm gun. The version with the 3.7 cm gun bore the design designation 6a/Z.W., the version with the 5 cm gun was designated 6b/Z.W. Compared to the Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.F version, the new Ausf.G version was modified. The modifications were e.g. improvements to the shock absorbers, wheel tensioners, brakes. The thickness of the rear hull armour was increased from 20 mm to 30 mm. The driver received a new visor cover, the visor itself consisted of 90 mm thick glass. The driver also received a binocular optical observation periscope (observation angle = 50°, magnification 1.15x). A new command turret was introduced (although not on all tanks produced). The left signal port on the turret ceiling was removed and a fan for exhausting after firing, protected by an armoured cover, was started and installed. The shape of the observation port in the doors on the sides of the turret was changed. The mounting of the searchlights on the fenders was changed. The Notek searchlight was started to be mounted.
Gradually various improvements and modifications were introduced. These were carried out either directly at the factory or retrospectively during repairs in the field workshops or during major repairs directly at the factories.
From 5/1940 onwards, new running wheels with wider rubber hoops (95 mm vs. 75 mm) were introduced. From 7/1940 the machine gun supply was changed from drum magazines to bag magazines (150 rounds). From 7-8/1940, due to problems with tracks hitting the shock absorbers, the front track support pulleys on both sides were moved to prevent such damage. In late 1940, additional 30 mm armour began to be fitted to the front and rear of the hull. The armour was bolted on, hence their positions were drilled into the basic armour and bolts fitted directly at the factory. There are known tanks from early 1941 where these bolts were fitted, but without the additional armour. The latter was assembled directly at the combat units. Later, wider Kgs 61/400/120 belts started to be fitted (the original belts were of the type Kgs 6111/380/120). Some tanks were modified for the African battlefield from 1/1941 (Trop). The distinguishing feature of the tropicalised version is the armoured covers of the air vents on the engine hatches. Another modification to the Trop version was to increase the fan speed. From 1/1941, modified carburettors were also fitted. The Gepäckkasten (storage box) for storing tools, crew personal belongings and spare parts started to be mounted on the rear of the turret. Official authorization for this storage box was given by In 6 on 23.4.1941. From 6/1941, a towing device for towing the fuel trailer began to be assembled. From 8/1941 a new air filtration system began to be fitted (also retrospectively to older versions of the Pz.Kpfw.III). The charger seat was also modified. From 9/1941 two spare wheels for the fenders were fitted. On 4/11/1941 In 6 approved the fitting of 11 spare links on the frontal armour of the hull. From 4/1942 the installation of fire fighting equipment in the engine compartment began. From 10/1942 various equipment for working in severe winter conditions (radiator heater, coolant heater, direct fuel injection system, hot air heater, deep snow track link grabs, anti-skid grabs for icy surfaces and wide winter tracks (Winterketten) started to be fitted.
Gradually, with the introduction of the production of even newer versions 7./Z.W. (Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.H) and 8./Z.W. (Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.J) were introduced to reverse modify the old machines to the new standard (Z.W.39). New drive and tensioning wheels were fitted, and additional show armour was fitted in front of the driver/radar frontal armour and in front of the gun shield.

Rearmament from 3.7 cm gun to 5 cm gun:
The first Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.G with the 3.7 cm gun was produced in 3/1940. A total of 142-163 Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.G tanks with the 3.7cm gun were produced. After the experience of the French campaign, it was assessed that the 3.7 cm gun did not meet the needs for successful tank warfare and the decision was made to replace the gun armament with the 5 cm Kw.K. L/42 gun. Urgent drawings were drawn up in early 6/1940 for a turret modification 6./Z.W. (Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.G) with an adapted 5cm gun and external 35 mm thick shield from the following version 7./Z.W. (Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.H). The first tanks with the new gun rolled off the production line in 7/1940. The earlier versions Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.E and Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.F also underwent this modification and rearmament.
According to Wa J Rue, 424 tanks with 3.7 cm guns (Ausf.E/F/G versions) were rearmed and modified.
