The designation M4A5 was assigned according to OCM 17856. The prototype tank was built by American Locomotive Co. based on the M4 medium tank to Canadian specifications. The main armament was a 57 mm gun with a .30 calibre machine gun in a British-supplied cast turret. A small cupola with a .30 calibre machine gun was installed on the left side. A smoke generator was installed on the right front of the turret. An engine derived from the Wright R-975 aircraft engine (Continental R-975-C1) was provided for the tail. Further development and production took place in Canada as the Ram I / Ram II.
