Hall PH-3

The U.S. Coast Guard ordered seven additional machines to its PH-2 in 1939, the PH-3 version. They differed from their predecessor in various minor, mainly aerodynamic changes - the Wright R-1820F-51 engines received new cowls with less air resistance, the cabin, nose, etc. were redesigned, resulting in an increase in speed to 256 km/h. The first of the new machines was introduced into service in May 1940, joining its predecessors. The remaining machines were delivered by January 1941. Like the PH-2, they were used for patrol and rescue operations around the American coastline. After the U.S. involvement in World War II and the subordination of the USCG to the Navy, the PH-3s also became involved in anti-submarine patrols, so in addition to depth charges, they received two uncovered gunports with 7.62 mm Lewis twin-caliber machine guns. They were decommissioned along with the remaining PH-2s in 1944, when they were replaced by the PBY Catalina and the PBM Mariner. They thus outlived their parent company, Hall Aluminum, which merged with the neighboring Consolidated Aircraft Corp in 1940.
