Brief history of the 157th Mountain Division

It was formed in September 1944 from the 157th Reserve Division and was based in the town of Mittenwald on the German-Austrian border in the Alps.
It included three mountain rifle regiments (296th, 297th and 1057th) plus also one battalion each of skirmishers, engineers and an anti-tank battalion (all numbered 1057).
It operated on the Gustav Line in Italy until it was renumbered as the 8th Mountain Division in 1945. It is sometimes referred to as Reserve-Gebirgsjägerdivision.
