Macchi C.200 - version overview

Macchi C.200 prototype
Two prototypes built with Fiat A.74RC 38 engine, good flight characteristics found

Macchi C.200
Open-cockpit fighter, serial production

Macchi C.200bis
The Breda factory modified one production aircraft for the more powerful Piaggio P.XIX R.C.45 engine, the performance was good, but Reggia Aeronautica Italia preferred the more modern Macchi C.202

Macchi C.200AS
Modifications for operation on the African battlefield

Macchi C.200CB
Later series aircraft were given bomb racks or additional tanks under the wings, and the designation as a fighter bomber / escort fighter was changed

Production took place in factories:
Aeronautica Macchi
SAI Ambrosini (Societa Aeronautica Italiana)
Breda (Societa Italiana per Construzioni Meccaniche Ernesto Breda, Milan)
A total of 1,153 M.C.200 aircraft were produced

[nadpis]Mckee MC.200 Seatta[/heading]

In 1936 it was the Italian air force opojeno relatively easy successes gained in the battles over Ethiopia. The ministry of aviation according to the received schedule R1) announced a contest for a fighter aircraft. This competition was also attended by the company Aeronautica Mckee With. p. a. with the prototype Mckee MC-200, the prototype was the work of the design team under the leadership of engineer Maria Castoldiho.

The prototype MC-200 (MM.336) first flew on 24. December 1937, and was a typical representative of the Italian design school, this was a relatively light but highly maneuverable machine with a weaker armament. Design dolnoplošného of the aircraft was all-metal, self-supporting. The cabin was closed and he was out of her view, as she was on a sort of hump on the trunk. For the drive has been selected the čtrnáctiválec Fiat A-74 RC-38 on the performance of 627 kW (841 hp), the engine was very tight kapotován and for for the cylinder head and valve manifolds was on the hood of oblong bulges. The undercarriage was retractable and the armament was composed of two velkorážných guns Breda-SAFAT with a stock 310 rounds of ammunition for each.

The contest itself was held in 1938 at the airport of Guidonia, near from Rome and Mckee MC-200 won it. The first order of 99 aircraft took place from June 1939 to march 1940, followed by another order, entered production in June 1940 joined another producer SAI in ambrosini and later by the milanese factory Societá Italiana per Construzioni Meccaniche Ernesto Breda. Fighter aircraft so made a total of three factories. After admission to the loadout got an aircraft-combat naming Saetta (Arrow).

The arrival of the troops, however, wasn't simple, the pilots 4. Stormo these modern fighters completely rejected, both were used on biplanes and further failed to reconcile fully closed kapkovitou cab. Designers, therefore, cover the cab modified and a new cabin was in its upper part open, it was a concession, which had forced the pilots from other units to which he was MC-200 comes. Aircraft of the first production runs were accompanied by several accidents, when switched at a higher speed unexpectedly into the fall. To blame was the wrong profile in certain parts of the wings, the fault was immediately removed and the pilots gradually found that they fell into the hands of a very skillful and well surging aircraft, marked by the light of piloting.

Production Saetty ended in the summer of 1942 after delivery 1 153 aircraft. Based on the experience of the pilots was the desire to upgrade, but for major improvements there was not much room. For the whole period of production has remained unchanged engine and it was a major limitation for the amplification of firepower. The increase in stocks of ammunition for machine guns2), yet the flight characteristics have not changed and the aircraft is boldly did he build the british fighter aircraft, only the Spitfire was clearly superior. Successfully been deployed in Jugoslávii, Greece, Albania and over Malta, accompanied the Italian bombing of the machine and the German Ju-87. Pilots Saetty also fought in the the Soviet union, where they were initially quite successful. The last combat flights performed pilots twenty-three Saett in the royal air force of Italy against the Social republic.

Saetty gradually transferred to perform reconnaissance, battleships and bombing tasks, under the wings carry bombs, such as eight bombs weighing 15 kg, or two hundred-pound or stokilové cougars. If they were podvěšeny two stošedesátikilové, the aircraft was overloaded and podmotorovaný. For the implementation of reconnaissance flights, it was possible to hang up additional tanks with a capacity of one hundred to one hundred and fifty liters. Several tens of machines carried in each wing one machine gun Breda-SAFAT caliber 7,7 mm with five hundred rounds of ammunition for each. All of these adjustments, however, should necessarily result in the growth of the weight, the aircraft of the first production series had a take-off weight of 2 200 kg and the last produced aircraft 2530 kg, the engine has not changed, and the weight grew, Saetta has lost its excellent maneuverability and rate of climb.

The solution had to be Mckee C.201 from September 1941, powered by a supposed to be a more powerful engine Fiat A-76 RC-40, this engine however, has not been completed and aerodynamic improvements brought with the same engine as should Saetty increase of 7 km/h. The Italian air force this type of rejected and adopted to fundamentally modernized Mckee C.202, which would be powered by the invert fork dvanáctiválcem Daimler-Benz DB 601 AND, therefore, his Italian license, but it is already a completely different aircraft.
One more attempt of reconstruction of the aeroplane I must mention it was Mckee MC.202Bis, which after the end of production of the factory of Breda modified and installed engine Piaggio P.XIX R.C.45 on the performance of 880 kW, the engine had a completely different fairing, but even this plane was not accepted.

1) it was a very ambiciosní plan for the development of the Italian air force, when his through the air force had to get 3 000 new aircraft
2) machines of a later date of production bore 370 rounds of ammunition for each machine gun.
