The impetus for the development of the OT-62 was given by the commander of the tank and mechanized troops, which in the spring of 1956 submitted to the Technical board of General Staff the preliminary technical - tactical requirements for medium-track, floating transporter weighing 12 tons to transport mechanized infantry.
In the late 1950s Czechoslovakia bought a license to produce BTR-50s from the Soviet Union. The received documentation was used to develop a new tracked armoured personnel carrier for Czechoslovak army and Ludowe Wojsko Polskie (LWP). The Praga RN (Fast Freight) was a medium-sized truck produced by the Praga car factory from 1933. The vehicle was powered by a petrol six-cylinder engine. In 1934, the Praga RND (Fast Freight Diesel) version was produced, equipped with a four-cylinder diesel engine. The RN/RND cars were modernized many times over time and remained in production for about 20 years. Both types became one of the most widely used trucks in Czechoslovakia, with several thousand being used by the Czechoslovak army.
The PTS is an amphibious vehicle of Soviet origin. It was developed in the early 1960's as a replacement for the earlier K-61 amphibious vehicle. The name PTS stands for "Plavayushchij Transportyer Sryednyj", which is Russian for "medium amphibious vehicle". Although the PTS may also transport cargo on land it is slower and less fuel economic than regular transport vehicles.
