Northern Regional Command of the Israel Defense Forces
(פיקוד צפון, Pikud Tzafon)
This headquarters and its subordinate units are responsible for the "Northern Front″ on the borders with Syria and Lebanon. Its history dates back to the 1960s when it was in charge of directing military operations against Syria in the Golan Heights. Later, in the 1970s and 1980s, its activities increasingly shifted towards Lebanon and the detachments of Palestinian terrorist groups present there, such as "Black September″ but also "Fatah″ and others. It was also involved in the "Litani" operations in 1978 and "Shalom Ha'Galil" in 1982. AFTER the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the buffer zone in southern Lebanon, it continued to provide patrol duty along the borders demarcated by the United Nations. In addition to the well-known events of the summer of 2006 (the so-called: Second Lebanon War), the Northern Command is also engaged in the defence of the area of the so-called: "Shebaa Farms", claimed by both Syria and the Lebanese "Hezbollah".
The Command directs military units from Mount Hermon in the north to the city of Netanya in the south, with a significant presence in the Galilee and the Golan Heights. It is based in Zefat. The commander of this grouping during the "Lebanon War" was Maj. Gen. Udi Adam (otherwise the son of Gen. Yukutiel Adam, who was killed in Lebanon in 1982). During the fighting, the command was criticized and Deputy Chief of General Staff Moshe Kaplinsky was sent "north" as a special representative of the General Staff, effectively taking command of the ground, air and naval forces in the area. Gen. Adam was eventually replaced in October 2006 by Maj. Gen. Gadi Eisencott. But one cannot help feeling that Gen. Adam also shouldered much of the blame for the mistakes of the political leadership.

The Northern Regional Command is composed of the following units:
- Northern Corps Command: It is a separate command (Gajish) independent of the Regional Command. Headed by a Major General, it is activated when a larger number of divisions are called up.
- Northern Command Liaison Battalion
- Special Combat Detachment (Remote Reconnaissance Detachment)
- Logistics Battalion: ordnance and army workshops, Repair-Maintenance Company, Material and Fuel Transport Company, Ammunition Company, Engineer-Construction Company.
