Union of Armed Struggle (ZWZ)
(Union of Armed Struggle)
Związek Walki Zbrojnej (ZWZ) - designation of the Polish Armed Forces in occupied Poland during World War II from November 13, 1939 to February 14, 1942.
The ZWZ was formed by reorganizing its predecessor, which was the Service for the Victory of Poland (Służba Zwycięstwu Polski SZP). The ZWZ was to be nationwide, non-partisan, strictly apolitical and, unlike the SZP, was to organize combat and sabotage actions.
The territorial organisation of the ZWZ was divided into two areas:
- The territory of Poland under German occupation - the commander Stefan Rowecki was based in Warsaw.
- The territory of Poland under Soviet occupation - commander Michał Tokarzewski-Karaszewicz based in Lvov.
In 1942, the ZWZ merged with other resistance organizations to form the Land Army (AK).
