Lenin's Order

It was established by a resolution of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR on 6 April 1930 as the then highest state decoration to recognize outstanding achievements in the construction of socialism. According to the statutes and their supplements, it is awarded to individual citizens and collectives, factories, institutions, social organizations, union and autonomous republics, regions and other territorial administrative units for particularly outstanding merits in the revolutionary movement, labor activity and defense of the socialist homeland, for significant contributions to the development of friendship and cooperation among peoples, to the struggle for peace, democracy and social progress. It is also awarded to all holders of the Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of Socialist Labor titles. High honors may also be bestowed on persons who are not citizens of the USSR and on factories, organizations, institutions and cities of other states. It is worn on the left side of the chest, as the first in order of distinction.


Several Czechoslovak soldiers have also been awarded the Order of Lenin. In addition to those to whom it was presented along with the Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarded it on 17 April 1943 to then Colonel Ludvik Svoboda for his exemplary leadership of the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Field Battalion in the battle for Sokolovo, and 11. December 1943 to Lieutenant Vladimir Janko, Chief of Staff of the Tank Battalion, and Second Lieutenant Sergei Petras, Commander of the Motorized Machine Gun Platoon, for exemplary performance of military duties in the Battle of Kiev.
In all, forty-one thousand persons, including thirty-six thousand soldiers and partisans, and over two hundred units and formations of the Soviet Army were decorated with the Order of Lenin during the years of the Great Patriotic War.
