Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha: War Cross of Karl Eduard
(Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha: Carl Eduard Kriegskreuz)
Like other rulers of the German states, the last Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Karl Eduard, established on 19 July 1916 an award based on the famous Prussian Iron Cross First Class. This decoration was the so-called Carl Eduard War Cross (Carl Eduard Kriegskreuz).
With a few exceptions, this cross was only awarded to men who had served in Infantry Regiment No. 95 and had already been awarded the Iron Cross First Class. Only 97 of this decoration were awarded during the entire First World War.

Shape:

Silver eight-pointed cross with a circular central medallion.
Obverse:
The arms of the cross flanked by a simple raised moulding, their inner surface finely grained. A green enamelled laurel wreath is placed over the arms, tied with a small ribbon at the bottom. The central medallion, flanked by a double raised moulding, bears in its centre a projecting crowned monogram of the Duke 'CE' in Gothic script. The inner surface of the medallion is also finely grained.

Reverse:

The arms of the cross flanked by a simple raised moulding, their inner surface finely grained. The central medallion bears the coat of arms of Saxony, flanked by the inscription FIDELITER ET CONSTANTER (Faithful and Steadfast), divided at the bottom by a six-pointed star. The reverse side has a vertically placed pin.
Method of wear:
The cross was worn pinned on the left side of the uniform.
