HVAR - 127 mm unguided rocket

From 1942 the US became involved in the development of aircraft missiles. A significant incentive was also successful use of missiles in the Luftwaffe against the american bombers. The americans, however, were looking for protizemní missile capable of destroying, in particular tanks, trains and fortifications.

The development of the american missiles was commissioned by the California institute of technology. He struggled in particular with the problems concerning the production of appropriate propelling charges. Most american manufacturers of the time still couldn't produce the dust grain (tube) of large dimensions. The first american rockets because they had sufficient power. The situation changed in December 1943, when he managed to produce a dust grain with a diameter of 107 mm and a weight of almost 11 kg.

Then it was decided to proceed to the construction of the executive arrow aviation rockets of caliber of 127 mm (5 inches) marked as HVAR (High Velocity Aircraft Rocket). Rocket was a very successful design. For its time had a very well resolved design jet bottom, where the combustion gases ooze out of the 8 nozzles around the perimeter of the dna, while the central nozzle, a closed membrane, used as a safety valve during extreme rise in pressure. Warhead was in two versions – either with tříštivotrhavá or ap protipancéřová, in both cases with the shock lighter.

Rocket has taken to the loadout as air force, army, navy. The first time was the missile combat used in July 1944 in France. Quickly gained popularity as a reliable and effective weapon, and has earned you the nickname "Holy Moses" (Holy Moses). A total of was produced over a million of these missiles. After the war, was a rocket fitted with a more modern combat warhead with cumulative charges and contactless lighter. Production ended in 1955 and in 1957 was finally taken out of production.
