Medal "For service in peacekeeping missions of the Slovak Army":
(awarded in 1994-2002)


The Military Medal was established by the Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic by MoD Order No. 35 of 15 May 1994. The order came into force on 1 May 1994. The Medal was awarded until 30 June 2002 to soldiers on active service and civilian employees of the Army of the Slovak Republic for service in the performance of tasks within the framework of United Nations peacekeeping forces, military missions and other international organisations and to soldiers who significantly contributed to the provision and deployment of soldiers for military service abroad or to soldiers who, in the performance of tasks in the performance of military service abroad, demonstrated bravery and courage, saved life or saved property on a large scale.


First degree - after six months of military service,
II.degree - after twelve months of military service,
III.degree - after eighteen months of military service,
Level IV - after twenty-four months of military service,
Grade V - may be awarded to soldiers and civilian staff who have made a significant contribution to the preparation and provision of deployed UN, EUMM and CSCE forces,
Grade VI - may be awarded to soldiers and civilian staff who have contributed significantly to the preparation and provision of deployed UN, EUMM and CSCE forces,
Grade VII - for exceptional performance of tasks (deployment of life) within UN peacekeeping forces, EUMM and CSCE,
Grade VIII - for exceptional performance of tasks (deployment of life) within UN peacekeeping forces, EUMM and CSCE,


Notes:
Medal of V.and VI.degree can be awarded to a military unit (unit), which operates outside the territory of the Slovak Republic within the UN peacekeeping forces, EUMM and CSCE.



After 1997 the conditions of awarding were modified:
1st degree - after six months of military service,
II.degree - after twelve months of military service,
III.degree - to those who have significantly contributed to the provision and sending of soldiers for military service abroad,
IV.degree - to those who have made a significant contribution to the provision and deployment of soldiers for military service abroad,
V.degree - to those who have shown bravery and courage, saved a life or saved property on a large scale in the performance of tasks in the performance of military service abroad,
VI.degree - to those who, in the performance of tasks in the performance of military service abroad, have shown bravery and courage, saved life or saved property of a large scale,



Description of the medal:
The medal is strienberry in colour and has a diameter of 35 mm.


Obverse of the medal:
The obverse of the medal consists of the emblem of the Slovak Army. The obverse of the medal is based on the emblem of the Army of the Slovak Republic, which is a gothic shield copying the shape of the shield of the national emblem of the Slovak Republic. At first glance, it expresses the connection with the state symbolism of the Slovak Republic.
The shield features two crossed swords with the blade pointing downwards. The sword has always symbolised the army, sometimes it was also used as a symbol of armed protection of the territory or as a symbol of military art. The downward position of the blade conveys a protective nature. The swords used are a modified version of a sword from the archaeological find in Turčianska Blatnica, which fully symbolizes the continuity with the military history of Slovakia.


Reverse of the medal:
The reverse of the medal bears the inscription "MINISTER OF DEFENCE OF SLOVAK REPUBLIC".


Ribbon of the medal:
The ribbon of the medal is 38 mm wide and 55 mm long. The basic colour of the ribbon is pale blue. On the left side there are three three-millimetre strips in the colours white-blue-red.


Ribbon of the medal:
On the ribbon of the medal is attached the Roman numeral of the appropriate grade, made of silver-coloured metal.


The author of the medal is Štefan NOVOTNÝ, Peter ŠVAJDA.


By Act 512/2002, the medal - Military Medal for Service in Peacekeeping Missions of the Army of the Slovak Republic, 1st to VIth Degree was replaced by the Military Medal for Service in Peacekeeping Observer Missions.

Despite the fact that the "Medal for Service in Peacekeeping Missions of the Army of the Slovak Republic" was replaced by the "Medal for Service in Peacekeeping Observer Missions" by the Law No.: 512/2002, the Medal for Service in Peacekeeping Missions of the Army of the Slovak Republic - V.degree was awarded to the members of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Unit of the 1st Battalion of the Army of the Slovak Republic operating within the international coalition of the CJTF/CM troops in Kuwait and Iraq in the year 2003 (20.5.2003).
