After the completion of the 96 machines P-12C production switched to a version of the P-12D, which was completed 35 machines from the original order (31-243/277). These machines, completed between 25. February and 28. April 1931, visually from the previous versions did not differ, the Model 227, the sound of his corporate designation, however, used the engine Pratt & Whitney R-1340-17, its ignition has been relocated in front of the engine and the annular cover, the engine lacked the auxiliary legs. Additionally, it was on the P-12D modified and 16 other P-12C, and it 31-152/154, 156, 157, 159/161, 175, 195, 209/212, 233 and 234. As well as P-12B and C, P-12D later during the service were given a new rudder from the version P-12E. P-12D served at 8. fighter group , Langley Field, namely the 34. and 35. fighter squadrons and maybe even at 36. squadron, and later for follow-on training at a flight school at Chanute Field.

P-12D WITH.Well. 31-275 was another of the P-12, which has been tested a new engine, in this case zpřevodovaný Pratt & Whitney GISR-1340E, and also got the tail surfaces of the P-12E. The engine but failed and after the completion of the tests was this machine, bearing the designation XP-12H, rebuilt in June of 1932 back to the standard P-12D..
