The national air races in 1926, and won the Boeing FB-3 navy, and air force the next year decided to get ready. for the races has been allocated to the P-1A 26-295, which got the engine V-1570 Conqueror with the power increased from the standard 447 544 kW, and equal to the wings, severed from the XPW-8A. Plus, he was also the surface of the cooler, which used PW-8, and from the PW-8 was based on also aerodynamically clean engine cover. The Curtiss machine has assigned the designation of Model 34Q, the army him for use of the engine, the Conqueror named the XP-6A. The races were held on 19.- 25. September 1927 in Spokane and the XP-6A was deployed together with the prototype XP-6, opponents have been mostly Boeing FB-5. XP-6A, piloted by lieutenant Battenem, masterfully won with the achieved speed 323,9 kms/h, second place went to the XP-6 (which by the way besides the engine, the mental many do) with a speed of 305 km/h. The next year, however, the XP-6A did not participate in - crashed during the preparations.

In addition to the 26-295 was still one XP-6A, but this was about the standard P-6A renamed at the time was used for testing, and with the first XP-6A had nothing to do..
