XP-6B was the designation assigned to the last P-1C(Ser No 29-259), which was delivered to the USAAC on 18 July 1929 with the V-1570C Conqueror engine. It was intended not as a prototype, but as a record-setting machine to be used by Captain Ross G. Hoyt on a long distance flight from New York to Nome, Alaska. Hoyt already had experience in other record-breaking events, working with people like Ira Eaker and Carl Spaatz. The machine was known at Curtis as the Hoyt Special, but was christened "Newalaska" before the flight itself. The XP-6B, unlike the XP-6A, was a full member of the P-6 family, and in addition to the engine, had the same nose shape as the P-6A. The main difference was the tanks built into the sides of the fuselage, which increased the maximum capacity to five times.

The Hoyt took off from Mitchell Field near New York City on July 18, 1929, and managed to cover the 7,242 km to Nome in 38 hours, including 34 hours and twenty minutes in the air. On the return trip, however, Hoyt had to make an emergency landing near Valemont, British Columbia, in which his Hawk flipped onto its back. It was then repaired and used at Wright Field for testing until August 1931, when it was scrapped.
