Unneeded tank chassis become a profitable commodity in the civilian economy after service in the army. One of the conversions is this modification of the military repair plant VOP 025 Nový Jičín, where an unneeded tank chassis T-55 was adapted for breaking up hot slag under a blast furnace. The machine was stripped of the turret and in its place a boxy glassed-in driver's cab was fitted, where the tank's controls were brought out. Steel profile beams were welded to the front armour to carry special slag-breaking equipment (ploughshares, ploughs). Nine such modified tanks were used in the steelworks of ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s.. Due to the lack of suitable platforms and the extremely harsh conditions that contributed to the short service life of these conversions, the company decided to replace these vehicles with Caterpillar civilian remote-controlled bulldozers. The decommissioned tanks are stored in the yard of the steelworks and are probably awaiting the end of their existence as "food" for the Ostrava furnaces.
