Brückenlegepanzer Pz-68 (Brü Pz-68)

Development

The development of the Brü Pz-68 bridge tank was started by the Swiss company Eidgenössische Konstruktions-Werkstätte, EKW in 1965. The first prototype was built on a Pz-61 tank underbody and carried a steel bridge structure. However, mass-produced units already used the Pz-68 tank's machine bottoms and the bridge structure was made of aluminium alloys. Production began in 1974 and the Brü Pz-68 bridge tank was inducted into the Swiss Army's arsenal a year later.

Armament

The Brü bridge tank. The Pz-68 is designed to quickly bridge water and terrain obstacles with a maximum width of 18 m.

Description

The Brü Pz-68 bridge tank is based on the machine underbelly of the Pz-68. The turret assembly has been removed and the base of the retractable gear carrying the bridge has been fitted in its place. The bridge tank crew consists of 3 men, a commander, driver and engineer. The driver's compartment is located at the front of the hull. In the space of the original turret assembly is the commander's and engineer's compartment. The front of the hull is made of cast homogeneous armour, it has an inclined slope and forms a rounded toe in the front part, in the upper part it transitions into a flat hull ceiling, which slopes slightly backwards in the rear part above the engine compartment. Fenders are fitted on both sides of the body, above the track along its entire length. In their central part, at the level of the base of the bridge extension, are three tool boxes for tools, spare parts and various tank accessories. The thickness of the armour ranges from 15 to 40 mm, reaching up to 120 mm in the exposed parts of the tank (hull front). The hull provides the crew with protection from infantry weapons and artillery shells.

The Pz-68 is armed with only 8 Nebelwerfer 80.5 mm calibre smoke grenade launchers.

Chassis, engine and transmission

The tank's chassis consists of six running wheels on both sides of the hull, with the drive wheel at the rear and the tensioning wheel at the front. The suspension of the running wheel arms is suspended by a system using a set of pre-tensioned circular washers (Belleville Tellerfeder). The upper branch of the belt is supported by three pulleys. The width of the track belt is 520 mm and the length of the contact area between the belt and the ground is 4 430 mm. The belts can be fitted with rubber feet to prevent wear on the road. The running gear is not equipped with side guards.

The tank is powered by an 8-cylinder MTU MB 837 Ba-500 diesel engine with an output of 485 kW at 2,200 rpm. Torque transfer from the engine to the chassis is provided by a semi-automatic SLM transmission, with 6 forward and 2 reverse gears. The tank's electrical system operates at 24 V and is powered by four 6 V batteries of 200 Ah each.

The tank is equipped with a pressure filter and anti-WMD filter as standard equipment. The tank is not equipped with a fire suppression system and is not adapted for underwater travel. It can cross a water obstacle without preparation by wading to a depth of 1.1 m.

Special superstructure with bridge

The extension gear is in the form of a long steel arm, along which the bridge is extended over the obstacle or, conversely, retracted back to the transport position. The bridge with the extension arm is attached to two support frames during the movement. One is located above the space originally intended for the turret set and forms the base of the entire extension device, and the other is fixed at the rear of the hull. At the top, on either side of the support arms, the frames are fitted with steel swivel rollers on which the bridge is moved during handling. This method of horizontally laying the bridge over an obstacle distinguishes the Brü Pz-68 from most bridge tanks. The horizontal method of laying the bridge does not exceed the height of the tank in the transport position. The entire bridge-laying process thus takes place at a much lower height than on tanks using scissor-type bridge structures. This has a great advantage for masking the whole process of bridge laying and folding. The disadvantage, however, is the limited manoeuvrability of the tank when moving, as the bridge as a whole extends well beyond the front and rear contours of the vehicle.

Bridge

The bridge on the original prototype's machine bottom Pz-61 was made of steel parts. However, a bridge made of aluminium alloys was included in series production, which reduced its weight considerably. The bridge is used as a complete unit, unlike scissor-type folding structures, which facilitates better concealment of the entire bridge laying and folding manoeuvre from the adversary.
