He 111 Z-1 aircraft have been operated by the LLG 2 squadron since 1943, where they were used to tow gliders Gotha Go 242 while supplying German troops in the Cuban. However, most of the He 111 Z-1 was damaged or destroyed due to accidents at inappropriate Russian airports and due to enemy activity. In the fall of 1944 (after losing a significant portion of the He 111 Z-1 in operation), LLG 2 was disbanded.

Heinkel He 111 Z-1

Brief history:

The German five-engined He 111 Z-1 tug was certainly one of the most unusual aircraft used by the German Luftwaffe. Its creation was the brainchild of General Ernst Udet, who, during a working visit to Ernst Heinkel's factory in Rostock, had the idea of joining two He 111s and adding a fifth engine at the point of connection. The Luftwaffe needed such a large towing aircraft for its huge gliders Messerschmitt Me 321, which still needed a tri-crew Messerschmitt Bf 110 for their flight, but this was a very risky business. Professor Heinkel took up the idea and by the autumn of 1941 the first of two He 111Z V-1 "Zwilling" (Twin) prototypes had already flown.

The He 111 Z tug was a merger of two He 111 H-6 aircraft, joined only by a wing, the tail surfaces were retained, as were the complete landing gears of both original aircraft. The joining of the wings, was certainly not a simple matter as it would appear at first glance, the entire inside of the wings had to be redesigned, the original lift had to be removed and the original elliptical wing was connected to a new rectangular centroplane with a fifth engine. The first pilot sat in the left fuselage and from his cockpit controlled all five engines, the controls and the landing gear of his half, the co-pilot from his cockpit in the right fuselage controlled the controls and landing gear of his half. In the left half there was also a mechanic, gunner, and pilot, and in the right fuselage there was a mechanic and gunner beside the co-pilot.

The tests of both V-1 and V-2 prototypes went smoothly and almost without problems, which is admirable just considering the wiring of the many control rods of the aircraft and the engine controls.
At the very end of 1941, the Luftwaffe ordered the construction of ten production aircraft, and the Heinkel A.G. factory delivered the last of them in the spring of 1942; these aircraft were assembled from components of the He 111 H-6 and He 111 H-16. Each aircraft apparently had a different armament, which changed during operations.
The Heinkel He 111 Z-1 flew with the Messerschmitt Me 321 in tow, using up to six Walter rocket engines. The "Zwilling" also frequently towed two cargo gliders Gotha Go 242. For long flights, a total of four additional fuel tanks of 900 litres each could be suspended under both fuselages, for a total fuel supply of 8,250 litres.

The tugs, along with the Me 321 Gigant gliders, were based in France for quite a long time in preparation for Operation Hercules, which was to be the capture of the island of Malta, and later preparations were underway for the capture of Astrakhan and Baku, in January 1943 they were to help with the supply of German troops at Stalingrad, finally they took part in the supply of the German bridgehead at Kuban, on the way back they carried wounded soldiers, the tug carried 30 soldiers and the glider a hundred or more... In the spring of 1943 these aircraft were withdrawn to Germany and later again to France. For some time, an airborne operation in Sicily was considered, but it never happened because there were no suitable airfields. The "Zwillinge" unit was disbanded in 1944, at that time it had only four He 111 Z aircraft in its armament.
