After the annexation of France by Germany, the Lorraine 37L artillery tractor chassis were captured by the new owners and used for conversion into a self-propelled howitzer. After the presentation of the Lorraine 37L tractors on 23 May 1942 to Adolf Hitler himself, 160 of this captured tractor were ordered to be converted to self-propelled guns. Of these, 60 pieces were to be produced in the form of a 105 mm light howitzer carrier leF.H.18. Hitler's order of 4 June 1942 changed the number of converted machines to 78 pieces.
The first batch of 12 pieces was completed in 9/1942. Of these, 6 pcs were included in 6. Batterie/gepanzerte Artillerie Regiment 1 (Sfl) and 6 pieces to the 6th Batterie/gepanzerte Artillerie Regiment 2 (Sfl).
The other two pieces produced had a modified design and in 12/1942 were sent to 15. Batterie/Artillerie Regiment 227. The Artillerie Regiment 1 (Sfl) and Artillerie Regiment 2 (Sfl) were disbanded and renamed respectively at the turn of 1942/43. All machines from these units (12 pieces) were sent to Artillerie Regiment 155 of the 21st Panzer Division. Another 6 pieces of machines were produced in 9/19/1943 and again in 10/19/1943 another 6 pieces. The total number of machines produced was thus 24 pieces. These were used in 1944 in the fighting after the Allied landings in Normandy as part of Artillerie Regiment 155.
