R-60M

A modernized version of the basic type R-60 with a new more sensitive sensor cooled with nitrogen, which has an extended viewing angle to 20°. Flight tests new guidance system, OGS-75 Komar-M were launched already in 1973. The upgraded sensor allows to carry out an attack on air targets from the back and front side. New was also the martial part of the AB-62 rod-type weighing 3.5 kg, which entailed the extension of the airframe of the rocket by 43 mm. In the arsenal of the soviet air force introduced in 1982 (?).

R-60MK

Export version of the R-60M missile with Kolibri-M radar lighter. The R-60MKs were used in combat by the Iraqi Air Force during the Iraq-Iran War in the 1980s. One Iraqi MiG-23ML from the 63rd Fighter Squadron on August 11, 1984, he had the assault of an Iranian fighter over the Persian Gulf with the assistance of the R-60MK F-14A Tomcat serving at 81st Tactical Fighter Wing. The Iraqis also used their R-60MK during the first hours of Operation Desert Storm on January 17 and 18, 1991, when [ url=/viewtopic.php] MiGy-23[/url] a The MiG-29 of the Iraqi Air Force tried unsuccessfully to intercept and shoot down the attacking aircraft of the US Air Force. Probably with the help of missiles R-60K/MK was Iraqi MiGem-25PD of the 96th Fighter Squadron shot down an American drone reconnaissance aircraft on December 23, 2002 RQ-1A Predator during its reconnaissance mission over Iraq.
R-60MK were also used over the Indian subcontinent, when August 10, 1999 shot down the Indian MiG-21bis patrol aircraft Atlantique, which disrupted Indian airspace. A cash pair of MiGs from the 45th Squadron was sent against the intruder. The head of S/Ldr Bundel intercepted a Pakistani naval machine on his radar at a distance of 10 to 15 km. After the approval of the guidance station, the Indian pilot detonated one R-60, which at about 11.17 hit the left engine of the intruder, which eventually crashed on Pakistani territory.

The soviet R-60M were used in combat during the soviet war in Afghanistan in the eighties. The missiles were used on fighter aircraft MiG-23MLD providing escort strike aircraft intended for attacks on targets of the mujahideen. Unlike the pakistani F-16A the soviet Mig-23MLD no kills during the conflict nepřipsaly.

Mig-23MLD ("white 08" and "white 64") in images comes from the equipment 120. IAP, which was in the second half of the 80. years stationed in the afghan Bagram lying north of Kabul. Both aircraft are captured in a typical interceptor configuration: 2 shots R-60M, 2 missiles R-24R and auxiliary fuel tank PTB-800..

The original rakes R-60 were equipped with a warhead with tungsten rods to increase efficiency. The R-60M warhead (and parts of export R-60MK intended mainly for Allied states under the Warsaw Pact - eg the GDR, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, or exported after the collapse of the USSR) was instead of tungsten rods equipped with rods from ochudobneného uranium, ie waste obtained from the production of fuel for nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons. The barrel projectiles account for about 45% (1.6 kg) of the total weight of the warhead (3.5 kg).

Depleted uranium (consisting mainly of the isotope 238 U) has about 60% of natural uranium radiation and most of its radiation is alpha radiation (so it can be shielded by the rocket body itself, covered by the rocket's transport envelope).

After the unification in 1990, Germany took over the R-60MK missiles into its arsenal, but the warheads with enriched uranium in these missiles were changed for maintenance with warheads with tungsten rods from missiles R-60.

R-60M missile under the wing of MiG-31D3 (MiG-31DZ). Photo taken in May 2013 during a combat readiness check at the Pemboj polygon near Vorkut (By Aleksey Reznichenko, http://lelik1970.livejournal.com/)

The ionizing radiation symbol is nicely visible on the warhead. The same symbols are also visible on the photos of R-60MK missiles from the arsenal of the Slovak Armed Forces (exercise Strela-1 in 2006), which were inserted by koba.
