In 1938, a self-propelled gun designed to fight against ground targets (bunkers) was created. The details of the design were discussed at a debate on 16.8.1938. Thus, on the chassis of a 12-ton Sd.Kfz.8 semi-tractor (DBs 8 and DB 9), a small, 10-piece series of a remarkable conversion to a bunker buster was built in 1939, but despite its original purpose, it later became more of a tank destroyer. Armament consisted of the 88 mm Flak 18 anti-aircraft gun. These machines underwent their first deployment during the 1939 campaign in Poland as part of the 1.Kompanie/Pz.Jäg.Abt.8 unit, numbering 10 machines. Later the unit underwent an organizational change (1 February 1940), when its strength was reduced to 6 machines, and in this form took part in the fighting in France as part of Guderian's XIXth Army Corps. The unit later took part with its machines in a deployment to the Eastern Front in 6/1941. On 29/1/1942 the unit was renamed Panzerjäger Kompanie 601 and subsequently renamed again on 21/4/1942 to 3.Kompanie/Panzerjäger Abteilung (Sfl.) 559. The last three machines were destroyed in 3/1943.
