He completed his basic military service first at 1st Mixed Regiment of Radio Electronic Warfare in Kolin, then as a longer-serving he stayed at 1st Radio Technical Centre in Zbiroh.

In 1997 he was recruited as a professional soldier as a driver of the 6th Mechanized Battalion. In the same year he also participated in his first peacekeeping operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since 1999, he has served in the 6th Special Brigade of the General Staff of the Army of the Czech Republic, with which he completed the unit's overseas deployment to Kosovo in 1999.

In 2002, Jiří Schams became a member of the Military Police Headquarters in Prague and in 2003 a senior inspector of the Special Operations Group of the Military Police (SOG, Special Operations Group).

During the Iraq War, he also served at the Czech Embassy in Kuwait and later in Baghdad with the Czech OCPA mission (Office of the Coalition Provisional Authority).

This was followed by a mission in the southern province of Basra with the Military Police contingent. During this period, he also expanded his qualifications to include the new qualification of field medic (Combat Medic).

After returning home, he completed further special courses focused on emergency care in field conditions (BARTS, Battlefield Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and Skills), and also gained further experience as a volunteer member of the Prague Ambulance Service.

During 2004-2007, Jiří Schams was again deployed to Kosovo and Iraq. On 10 October 2007 he moved with the unit to Helmand, South Afghanistan. He ended his last mission, this time in Afghanistan, involuntarily early when he was struck in the head by shrapnel in a suicide attack on 17 March 2008 while escorting Danish aid workers to the town of Gereshk.
