MOD
Vice Admiral Akiyama Saneyuki

Akiyama was the son of a poor samurai. He first studied literature, but at the behest of his older brother Yoshifura (later a general), he entered the Naval Academy in Tsukii. During his studies, the academy was moved to Etajima in Hiroshima Prefecture and renamed the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy. Akiyama was an outstanding student, graduating in 1890 as the best of 88 students in the 17th class.
He served as a naval cadet on the Hiei and the Takachi. He was promoted to second lieutenant in 1892 and served on various ships (Ryuujo, Matsushima, Yoshino, Tsukushi, Izumi and Yaeyama) in the Pacific, Mediterranean and European waters.
He also served in the Reich Naval Torpedo School and then was assigned to the Naval Intelligence Service, where he participated in missions to Manchuria and Korea, for example.
In 1896 he was promoted to lieutenant and sent to the USA as a naval attaché. He wanted to study at an American naval academy but failed to do so. The reason for this was apparently tension between the US and Japan over the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom by the Americans.
In 1898, as an observer in the American fleet, he participated in the capture of Santiago de Cuba and the blockade of Havana harbor.
In January 1899, he received permission to serve 6 months on the U.S.S. New York and subsequently took several courses at the Naval War College at Newport.
Upon his return to Japan he was promoted to corvette captain and served as senior instructor of strategy at the Naval War College from July 1902 to November 1903.
After the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War, he accompanied Admiral Togo as an advisor on the battleship Mikasa. He played an important role in the planning of the Battle of Port Arthur, the Battle of the Yellow Sea, and drew up the seven-stage plan for the victorious Battle of Tsushima.
After the war, 1908, he was given his first command as captain on Akitushima and subsequently on Otowa, Hashidate, Izumo and the cruiser Ibuki.
He would be promoted to rear admiral on 1 December 1912. During World War I. During the World War I he travelled to Finland, England, USA and back. In October 1917 he was given command of the Second Fleet, but was retired at the end of the year with the rank of Vice-Admiral for health reasons.
