Hesse-Kassel (Kurhessen) was until 1803 the Lancracy of Hesse-Kassel. In the difficult times of 1803-1813, however, it was part of the Kingdom of Westphalia under the patronage of Napoleon's brother
Iron Helmet for Bravery
Orden vom Eisernen Helm
The decoration was modeled after the Prussian Iron Cross of 1813. The first variant is made up of the Brabant Cross of 1814. The decoration, which is often referred to by Falerists as the Order, was established by Elector Wilhelm I for the fighting men of the Courchessen troops, regardless of the rank of the decorated fighting soldier. Here again, the pattern is that of the Iron Cross of 1813, where the decoration was intended for brave soldiers regardless of the rank or social position attained by the soldier. This decoration was also to be divided into two classes. However, this did not happen (Class I was to be presented only by a crossed ribbon).
The decoration itself (helmet) is made of patinated iron. The cross measures 61 mm x 47 mm. The ends of the arms of the cross are topped with clover-like trefoils.
AVERS:
A knight's helmet, made of iron, is placed on the surface of the cross in its centre. The visor, which is openwork, is silvered, but on the chest is a silver gothic shield with the letters "W.K." (Wilhelm KURFÜRST). On the top of the helmet is a silver-plated lion's head. The helmet is topped with five ostrich feathers. On the lower arm of the cross, in its extension, is the year 1814. The reverse side of the cross is plain, only in the centre is the medallist's signature: KUMFF.
STUHA:
The ribbon is quite wide (46 mm) crimson red with two 4 mm wide white side stripes.
Award:
The cross was awarded once, on 22 September 1814. Only 73 crosses of this type were awarded.
The iron helmet, the second variant, which is already placed on the so-called German Cross was established later. The only reason for the change was to bring the cross as close as possible to the already famous Iron Cross of 1813.
It is again a cross made of patinated iron, squat, with straight arms, the edge of the cross is polished. The size of the decoration is 60 x 40 mm. The central helmet is exactly the same as the first type.
In 1815, 36 pieces of this cross were again awarded in a single issue. Crosses of both types are very rare, and so there are new pieces among the German phalierists, which were produced shortly after 1820, and more at the end of the nineteenth century.
