Velitelství pluku vzniklo 1. listopadu 1954 přejmenováním z velitelství 12. pěšího pluku [1951-1954]. Nacházelo se v Levicích a podléhalo velitelství 9. střelecké divise [1954-1955]. Od svého vzniku užíval pluk krycího označení VÚ 9975 a nesl čestné jméno "Jána Kollára".
