The regiment was established in June 1941 from the ranks of the fighter pilots. It was armed with MiG-3s and initially fought as part of the Northwest Front. In the autumn it was rearmed with LaGG-3 fighters and by the end of the year most of the pilots had returned to their normal work. The regiment, however, continued in operational service.
