The 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion was formed from the 99th Anti-Tank Battalion on 15 December 1941 at Fort Lewis, Washington. Training continues at Camp Hood, Texas. It landed at Casablanca on 26 January 1943 and was armed with M10 tank destroyers. He was deployed to the Gafsa-El Guettar area,Tunisia from 16 March 1943. It was the first American unit to make contact with British Eighth Army units on 7 April 1943. He arrived in the Naples area on 10 November 1943. After operating on the Italian front, he moved to England as part of the European invasion force.
"A" and "C" Companies land on Utah Beach on D-Day. The rest of the battalion lands on 10 June (D+4) and 11 June (D+5). Participates in the capture of Cherbourg harbor. For performance during operations at Cherbourg, 2 Platoon, "C" Company, receives a Presindential Unit Citation.Participates in Operation Cobra. Enters Belgium 2 September 1944 and supports the 9th Infantry Division during operations at the German towns of Manschau and Hofen. In October, he fights in the Hürtegen Forest. Parts of the battalion take part in the Battle of the Ardennes.The rest remain in the VII US Corps area. It supports operations against the dams on the Roer River in February 1945. It is rearmed with M 36 tank fighters. It crosses the Roer River on 28 February and reaches the Rhine River near the town of Bad Godesberg. It reaches the beachhead at Remagen on 8 March 1945. He helps in the formation of the Ruhr Pocket and then moves to the Harz Mountains. He makes contact with Soviet troops at the Mulde River on 27 April 1945.
