9K58 Direction
The 9K58 Smerch is designed to destroy area targets, concentrations of live forces, lightly armoured equipment, command posts and other objects at ranges of 70 to 90 kilometres.
Types of unguided missiles 9M55K - a missile with a triple-shot submunition designed to destroy live forces and lightly armoured targets 9M55K1 - missile with submunition for destroying tanks and armoured vehicles 9M55K4 - missile designed to lay anti-tank minefields 9M55K5 - missile designed to destroy live forces and lightly armoured targets 9M55F - missile with detachable three-point warhead for destruction of live forces and lightly armoured targets 9M55S - missile with a volume detonating (fuel-to-air) warhead 9M528 - Missile with a three-point warhead for the destruction of live and lightly armoured targets
The launcher is mounted either on an 8x8 MAZ-543M chassis (designation 9A52-2) or on a 10x10 Tatra 815-6ZVR8T chassis (designation 9A52-2T), and a custom rocket launcher for twelve 300 millimetre calibre rockets is mounted on its base. One battery consists of six launchers and six reloading carriers.
The reloading is carried out by a reloading carrier, which is based on MAZ-543A (designation 9T234-2) or Tatra 815-6ZVR8T (9T234-2T). The rechargeable carrier carries an additional 12 missiles. The reloading and loading is done by a hydraulic crane mounted on the vehicle.
The system was introduced into the Soviet Army's armament in 1987.

The 9A52-2 self-propelled rocket launcher consists of a MAZ-543M transport vehicle, weapon superstructure and fire control system instrumentation, which is upgraded for the 9A52-2 Smerč-M version.
The weapon superstructure consists of a composite missile case with three quadruple rocket launchers, a mechanically driven aiming and targeting device and a PG artillery sight. The rocket launchers are empty when moved, they are loaded only in firing position.
For firing, unguided 9M55K rockets with a solid propellant engine and a cluster warhead are used. The warheads are equipped with a system of stabilisation, flight path correction (according to the parameters at the moment of missile launch) and determination of the moment of submunition ejection, which achieves extraordinary hit accuracy. The warhead may contain a 2 kg fragmentation submunition with increased shrapnel effect and a reinforced pre-fragmented body, PTM-1 anti-tank mines, or anti-personnel mines. The submunition strikes the target at an angle of almost 90° and is therefore capable of penetrating the overhead armour of lightly armoured targets in addition to destroying live forces. In development are warheads with increased spatial effect of the FAE (Fuel Air Explosive) type and with anti-tank submunitions guided in the final phase of flight.
An organic part of every self-propelled rocket launcher is the 9T234 ammunition and reloading carrier. The transporter is mounted on a modified MAZ-543A machine chassis. Its transport capacity is 12 unguided 9M55K missiles. To handle the missiles during reloading, charging and discharging, it is equipped with a crane boom with a capacity of 850 kg, which allows the missiles to be handled from another vehicle and from the ground.
