The Serbian princes and kings, on their accession to the throne, first received their ecclesiastical anointing in the monastery in Žič, which is located near the town of Kraljevo. It was not until 1903, when King Peter I Karadjordje[/url] came to the Serbian throne, that the Serbian royal crown was made in Vienna. It was made from cannonwork cut from a cannon that had stood at the fortress in Topolje until then and which had been used in the battle with the Turks by the Serbian national leader, the famous George the Black, in 1804-1813, during the first Serbian uprising. This cannon is still on display in the memorial. In the very neighbourhood of Topolje, on the Oplenica hill, there is the mausoleum of the members of the Karadjordjevic dynasty. The iron crown was made by a Viennese goldsmith company, gilded and decorated with precious stones.
King Alexander I. Obrenovic established a commemorative bronze medal in honour of his anointment as King of Serbia on 20 June 1889, which is found quite often in our collections.
The ribbon is triangular or flowing and is worn on a ribbon in the colors of the Slavic tricolor, or on a classic red ribbon. But in Serbia it was also worn on other ribbons /see the picture where the medal is hung on the Russian ribbon of the Order of St. Stanislaus/.
The medal was popular in Serbia, worn on all occasions, holidays and festivals. The medal depicted here is from a private collection and is available for republication.

In the current offer of the company eMedals, the medal is minted from 22k gold weighing 22,19 grams for the price of USD 12 000,-. Before that, she was offered in 2016 in an auction of the company Barac&Pervan, Zagreb. The plates are undoubtedly the same as those from which they were minted bronze medals. Was added to the crown, which exactly corresponds to the crown used on the medals of queen Natalie from the year 1885. It is therefore likely that this unique piece was made in Vienna. There is speculation that this is the specimen given by the king. Similar gold odražky are known also in some other common Serbian medals. The ribbon is new..
